Job Title: Adaptive Technology Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Adaptive Technology Specialist to join our team at the Oxnard School District. As a key member of our support staff, you will play a vital role in ensuring that students with visual impairments receive the necessary support and accommodations to succeed in their academic pursuits.

Job Summary:

The Adaptive Technology Specialist will be responsible for translating printed materials into Braille and Braille materials into standard print, as well as preparing maps and pictures in a raised drawing format for partially-sighted students. You will also operate specialized equipment such as thermoform Braille copiers, Braille writers, and close circuit televisions to prepare instructional materials.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Translate printed materials into Braille and Braille materials into standard print
  • Prepare maps and pictures in a raised drawing format for partially-sighted students
  • Operate specialized equipment such as thermoform Braille copiers, Braille writers, and close circuit televisions
  • Assist students in academic subjects and study activities relating to their Individual Education Plan (I.E.P.)s or 504 plans
  • Observe teachers' lesson presentations and work with students to reinforce lesson plans
  • Assist in maintaining inventories of equipment and classroom supplies related to Braille instruction
  • Perform other related duties as required
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One of the following: two years of experience working with elementary school-age children in an organized educational, health, child care, or other structured setting including experience in Braille translation, or one year of full-time experience in Braille translation
  • Possession of Literary Braille Transcribing certification from the National Library Service of the Library of Congress may be substituted for the required experience
  • Possession of a valid First Aid Certificate, comparable to the American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate
  • Possession of a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License
Working Conditions:

This position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to maintain confidentiality of pupil records and school reports. The successful candidate will be required to work in a team environment and to communicate effectively with students, teachers, and other staff members.
