This position emphasizes the delivery of pharmaceutical services within a healthcare or retail environment. It encompasses various Pharmacy Services responsibilities: the distribution of medications, which includes professionals who are trained and occasionally licensed to dispense drugs and controlled substances. This role also involves organizational support or service (administrative or clerical) and focuses on assisting daily operational activities (e.g., technical, clinical, non-clinical) in a hands-on setting. The majority of time is dedicated to providing support services or activities, typically under supervision. This is an experienced level position that necessitates a foundational understanding of job procedures and tools acquired through practical experience and may require vocational or technical education. The role operates under moderate supervision, with tasks generally routine in nature, though some may necessitate interpretation or deviation from standard practices, and involves communication of information that may require some explanation or interpretation.
Overview of Responsibilities
Under the general oversight of a pharmacist, this role executes pharmacy-related tasks in alignment with departmental policies and procedures to ensure optimal pharmaceutical care. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the preparation and distribution of medications, inventory management, compliance checks, financial transactions, customer service, and the maintenance of pharmacy documentation. Additionally, this role assists with the ordering, receiving, and inspection of medications and supplies.
Essential Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).
3. Registration as a Pharmacy Technician in Massachusetts.
4. A minimum of one (1) year of experience in a pharmacy-related role.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Associate's degree.
2. Two (2) years of pharmacy-related experience in a hospital environment.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: The following duties and responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature of the work and are not exhaustive. Additional duties may be assigned.
1. Engages in non-complex sterile and non-sterile medication preparation tasks, including the preparation of oral liquids and other extemporaneous dosage forms according to master formulary sheets or labels; prepares sterile compounds following established recipes or production guidelines.
2. Utilizes advanced automated technology to aid in the preparation and documentation of sterile products.
3. Accurately selects medications for automated dispensing cabinet replenishment with efficiency.
4. Conducts inventory management tasks, ensuring proper security, storage, and maintenance of all required records.
5. Accurately fills floor stock remote orders (e.g., Operating Room, Emergency Room) as verified by pharmacist checks.
6. Maintains storeroom areas, ensuring that supplies in short supply are ordered and that expired medications are promptly removed from stock.
7. Restocks medications into automated dispensing cabinets in appropriate patient care areas with accuracy and timeliness.
8. Manages emergency medication inventory in carts/kits, including ordering and maintaining adequate supply, restocking accurately, organizing for consistency, documenting medications used for billing purposes, and removing expired or damaged products.
9. Ensures medication rooms are maintained by stocking appropriate medications in patient-specific bins within automated dispensing cabinets and removing expired and discontinued medications.
10. Empties return bins in automated dispensing cabinets as part of the scheduled routine.
11. Operates the unit-dose machine to package bulk medications and appropriately compounds non-sterile medications following standard formulas and procedures.
12. Performs regular cycle counts of the carousel, maintaining accurate records of completion.
13. Takes responsibility for medication management in assigned patient care areas.
14. Assists in maintaining a clean and organized pharmacy environment by caring for equipment and cleaning after compounding prescriptions and manufacturing bulk medications.
15. Conducts temperature inspections of the refrigerator in the automated dispensing machine.
16. Executes financial transaction activities, which may include preparing patient billing information, processing third-party prescription benefits, troubleshooting insurance issues, and selecting appropriate pharmacy pay codes and plans for each transaction.
17. Inspects assigned medication storage areas monthly, maintaining adequate records of inspections to meet standards.
18. Greets and assists customers upon arrival to the pharmacy, participating in point-of-sale cash transactions and engaging in customer service activities.
19. Provides assistance to customers or patients over the phone, triaging calls as necessary.
20. Ensures all assigned work is completed accurately by the end of each shift, with all necessary quality control documentation completed promptly.
21. Communicates effectively with nursing staff, physicians, and ancillary services to meet departmental needs while maintaining a positive image of the pharmacy department.
22. Fosters collaborative relationships with peers and colleagues to effectively contribute to the achievement of group goals and promote a positive work environment.
Physical Requirements:
1. Ability to walk and stand for 90% of the day and occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
2. Frequent reaching and grasping at various levels.
3. Ability to push and/or pull non-motorized equipment weighing between 40 to 60 lbs.
4. Requires manual dexterity for fine hand manipulation to operate prescription medications and computer keyboards.
5. Ability to see medications, computer screens, and reports clearly.
6. Regular reading of automated dispensing reports.
7. Works in an environment with some discomfort due to dust, dirt, and temperature fluctuations.
8. May encounter broken glass and some exposure to hazardous chemicals.
