Job Summary

The Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a highly skilled Physician Assistant Gastroenterology to join our team. As a Physician Assistant Gastroenterology, you will be responsible for providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the development of our gastroenterology services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide patient-centered care to individuals with gastroenterological symptoms and diseases.
  • Collaborate with gastroenterologists and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement treatment plans.
  • Conduct routine GI consults and triage patients as needed.
  • Develop and maintain a face-to-face designated clinic or VVS clinic for clinical evaluation and treatment planning.
  • Transcribe routine prescriptions for colonoscopy preparation and refill GI medications as needed.
  • Assist gastroenterologists in the endoscopy unit by discussing and educating patients about their endoscopic procedure, completing a pre-anesthesia assessment, placing pre-procedure orders, and obtaining informed consent.
  • Discuss procedure results and provide post-procedural education to patients.
  • Assist with the coordination of care that may result from procedural findings, including new diagnoses of malignancy.
  • Review upcoming procedures for indications, contraindications, and appropriateness.
  • Perform elastography of the liver using FibroScan and enter the interpretive result into CPRS.
  • Be proficient with patient contact via telecons and video communications.
  • Place community care consults into CPRS if services are not available at ALMVAH.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the GI section chief.
Requirements
  • Graduate of a training program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of PA (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations.
  • Master's degree in any discipline or Bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a PA.
  • Successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program sponsored by VHA Office of Academic Affiliations or other postgraduate residency programs accredited by VA, ARC-PA, U.S. Armed Forces, or another accrediting agency.
  • Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is no longer required for employment in VHA.
  • Active, current, full, and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Proficient in spoken and written English.
Preferred Experience
  • 3 years or more working with GI patient population as a PA.
  • Experience working in the VA but not a necessity.
  • Comfortable managing independently patients with general gastroenterologic symptoms and diseases.
  • Enthusiastic about continuous knowledge improvement.
