Electrical Engineer Job Description

At IPS, we are seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to join our team in Somerset, New Jersey. As an Electrical Engineer, you will play a crucial role in planning, designing, and directing electrical engineering projects within our Design Department.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare design computations and quantity estimates for electrical projects, including medium voltage power distribution, low voltage systems, fire alarm systems, and backup power generation.
  • Use computer-assisted engineering and design software to prepare engineering and design documents, including AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Modify reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules, environmental impact studies, and designs for electrical projects.
  • Make calculations using engineering formulas and skills for design, including lighting calculations, power distribution calculations, equipment sizing, and electrical riser diagrams.
  • Select equipment based on recommendations of the Project Designer/Engineer and fill out equipment schedules.
  • Provide drawings for own designs and produce sketches to incorporate in drawings by drafters.
  • Research design options and document findings for Project Designer/Engineer.
  • Provide information to the Project Manager for incorporation into specifications.
  • Assure that drawings and designs are per company production and design standards.
Requirements:
  • 5 years of engineering/design experience in the building design industry, including lighting systems, fire alarm systems, branch circuitry, and electrical power distribution.
  • Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an accredited four-year College or University.
  • Experience with the design of building electrical systems, including building service, power distribution, generators, lighting, fire alarm, security, and other low voltage systems.
  • Strong understanding of the National Electric Code (NEC), NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, IBC, and other related building codes and standards.
  • Ability to work 3 days a week from the Somerset, New Jersey office.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Working knowledge of engineering design programs and computer-aided drafting software, including AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Experience with medium voltage systems, electrical hazardous classified areas, and telecommunications systems.
