Job Summary

Under the direction of a radiologist, performs radiographic procedures and diagnostic imaging at a technical level not requiring constant supervision of technical detail.

Administers roentgen rays, operates radiologic equipment to make clinical diagnostic x-ray images, processes images, prepares patient rooms, equipment, supplies, and medications.

Job SpecificationsEducation and Experience

Graduate of an accredited program in radiologic technology. Registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) with an active status preferred. Licensed by the Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety. CPR required.

Job Knowledge

The radiological technologist must have a good working knowledge of anatomy, understand principles of physics, electricity, and methods of exposure to obtain clearly defined images, and be able to set up and operate equipment.

He/she must know how to develop and process films/images, have knowledge of methods and techniques of x-ray therapy, and of hazards involved.

He/she knows how to maintain a system of records, understands variations of anatomical postures, such as supine, prone, laterally recumbent, and erect.

He/she has sufficient knowledge of psychology, patient care, and sterile techniques to deal with all types of conditions of patients.

Abilities, Interests, and Temperaments

Verbal ability is necessary to understand oral and written instructions stated in radiologic and medical terms and to exchange information with patients and hospital staff.

Spatial perception is necessary to visualize the inner structure of the human body in relation to the x-ray tube and image order to obtain radiographs of diagnostic value.

Form perception is necessary to perceive pertinent detail in technique charts and instructions relating to specific radiologic procedures to be carried out.

Clerical perception is necessary to perceive pertinent detail in technique charts and instructions relating to specific radiologic procedures to be carried out.

Manual dexterity is necessary to adjust machine controls, arrange, attach, and adjust supportive devices.

A preference for scientific and technical activities to master principles, techniques, and procedures of radiology.

A preference for processes, machines, and techniques in obtaining radiographs.

Ability to obtain satisfactory radiographs by following set procedures and standards.

Capability to evaluate information based on measurable and verifiable criteria.

Ability to make contact with people who may be under physical or emotional stress.

Ability to work with student radiographers, providing supervision and assessments of performance.

Must have the ability to work with a variety of patients of all populations (e.g. developmentally appropriate care, cultural diversity, patients with pain, victims of abuse or neglect, and diagnosis or procedure specific such as patients with congestive heart failure or cesarean delivery).
