Position Overview:

Texas Oncology is seeking a dedicated full-time Senior Pharmacy Specialist to enhance our team. This role is primarily focused on our retail division. Candidates with prior experience in retail, mail order, or pharmacy benefit management (PBM) are encouraged to apply. Experience in oncology is not a prerequisite. Key Responsibilities:

The Senior Pharmacy Specialist, under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist within a regulated pharmacy environment, is responsible for executing the technical, nonjudgmental aspects of medication preparation. With minimal oversight, this role includes maintaining accurate records and managing inventory. Tasks will be subject to verification by a registered nurse or pharmacist.

Essential Duties:

  • Prepare medication orders by compounding or admixing medications under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.
  • Ensure all orders are complete and accurate.
  • Verify patient information and physician authorization.
  • Check insurance approval for all orders prior to admixing.
  • Accurately admix drugs as prescribed by the physician in a timely manner, adhering to departmental guidelines and safety standards.
  • Calculate correct dosage volumes and maintain records for indigent patient drug programs as necessary.
  • Conduct weekly counts of controlled substances and maintain proper documentation.
  • Stay updated on current drug information and safety data sheets (MSDS).
  • Properly dispose of materials used in the preparation of chemotherapy and non-chemotherapy IVs.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the pharmacy environment as per established policies.
  • Conduct monthly checks for drug expiration dates and maintain accurate temperature logs.
  • Oversee inventory control of medications, including ordering, receiving, and shelving supplies.
  • Prepare labels and manage billing processes.
  • Possess a thorough understanding of pharmacy automation, data entry, and report generation.
  • May provide guidance to junior Pharmacy Technician staff.

Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Five to seven years of experience in a pharmacy setting with IV skills.
  • Oncology experience preferred, or extensive IV preparation experience.
  • IV certification preferred.
  • Certification as a Pharmacy Technician or compliance with State Pharmacy Board requirements recommended.
  • Completion of an ASHP accredited program or community college-based program is recommended.
  • Entry and mid-level experience will also be considered.

Physical Demands:
The physical requirements of this position include a full range of body motion, manual dexterity, and the ability to read and record measurements. The role may require prolonged periods of sitting or standing and occasionally lifting items weighing up to 40 lbs. Corrected vision and hearing within normal ranges are necessary.

Work Environment:
