Role Responsibilities: This associate veterinarian role involves administering care, treatment, and surgical procedures for both client-owned and shelter animals at East Bay SPCA.

The associate veterinarian dedicates 90-100% of their time to the Oakland AAHA full-service veterinary clinic, attending to appointments and performing surgeries.

Additionally, the associate veterinarian may allocate up to 10% of their time to shelter animal care in various locations, depending on organizational requirements.

Team Collaboration: As part of a multi-doctor team, this position collaborates closely with the VP of Medical Services, fellow associate veterinarians, and the medical support team to advance the mission of East Bay SPCA.

Job Category: Full-time, Exempt/Part-time, Exempt

Location: Must be willing to travel regularly between locations.

Reporting Structure: Reports to the VP of Medical Services.

Compensation: $140K - $180K based on experience, with potential annual bonuses up to $20K.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Care: 75% to 100% of duties include performing surgical procedures such as ovariohysterectomy, orchiectomy, tumor removal, hernia repair, and dental extractions.
  • Conducting veterinary health care functions, including examinations and treatments of both sheltered and client animals, while collaborating with medical support staff.
  • Working with the VP of Medical Services and fellow veterinarians to develop and implement clinic and shelter policies.
  • Maintaining accurate medical records and drug logs in accordance with veterinary standards.
  • Ensuring quality care for clients, staff, and volunteers throughout the clinic.
  • Consulting regularly with clients and collaborating with staff and management.
  • Staying informed on animal health protocols and surgical techniques.
  • Building positive relationships through effective communication with the community, volunteers, and staff.

Shelter Care: Up to 10% of duties involve performing veterinary health care functions for sheltered animals, including examinations and treatments, and working with the shelter medical support team.

Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and valid California Veterinary License.
  • Ability to obtain a DEA license within 60 days of hire.
  • Fear Free Certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Valid California Driver's License and insurable driving record.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a clinical setting.
  • Effective communication skills with clients and staff.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with other team members.
  • Proven ability to manage priorities effectively.
  • Desire to excel in a fast-paced environment.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift 50 pounds independently and perform repeated hand movements in surgery.

Work Environment: Work may occur in an animal shelter setting with exposure to outdoor conditions and potential animal-related injuries.
