Job Summary
The Los Rios Community College District is seeking a qualified candidate for a part-time, temporary (Adjunct) faculty position in English as a Second Language. This position is filled as needed through ongoing recruitment, and applicants are contacted and hired year-round based on college needs.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching assigned classes under the supervision of the area dean, helping students master course content, assessing student learning outcomes, and maintaining a thorough knowledge of their teaching field. Additionally, they will continue professional development, utilize current technology, and maintain standards of professional conduct and ethics. The instructor will also assist with articulation and curriculum development, serve on college committees, and participate in faculty governance. Other responsibilities may be assigned by the area dean.

The initial maximum salary placement is based on academic degree, upper/graduate level units earned, and/or related professional occupational experience per the Los Rios College Federation of Teachers Contract. For more information on the step placement process, please click here.

Typical Duties
The instructional assignment may encompass teaching courses across all levels in English as a Second Language. Specific courses offered may vary by campus, and may include:

  • ESL 37 Novice-High Integrated Reading and Writing
  • ESL 47 Intermediate-Low Integrated Reading and Writing
  • ESL 55 Intermediate-Mid Integrated Reading and Writing
  • ESL 311 College ESL Newsletter Production
  • ESL 315 Intermediate-High Integrated Reading and Writing
  • ESL 325 Advanced-Low Integrated Reading and Writing
  • ESL 350 Critical Reading, Research and Writing Through Literature


Minimum Qualifications
To be considered for this position, applicants must have a Master's in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis, or education with a TESL emphasis. Alternatively, they may have a Bachelor's in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate, and a Master's in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech, or any foreign language. All degrees must be from an accredited institution completed by the time of hire. Additionally, applicants must have an equity-minded focus, responsiveness, and sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
