Cardiovascular Stepdown Unit PCA II

We are seeking a highly skilled PCA II to join our Cardiovascular Stepdown Unit team at UMass Memorial Health. As a PCA II, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and support to our patients and families.
Key Responsibilities- Provide clear and timely communication to the RN regarding patient observations and changes.
- Participate in the development and maintenance of a safe environment, utilizing interventions to de-escalate patients and participating in restraints as directed.
- Assist patients with daily living activities, such as personal hygiene, ambulating, meals, and nourishment.
- Assist in moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients, utilizing proper safety techniques and body mechanics.
- Maintain patient safety by performing patient safety checks, utilizing fall prevention alternative devices/strategies, and following the Restraint Policy standards when caring for a restrained patient.
- Take and record vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, and pulse oxymetry.
- Perform EKGs, phlebotomy, Point of Care (POC) tests, and bladder scanning according to hospital standards.
- Collect, label, and prepare specimens for transport to the lab.
- Perform other selected unit-specific procedures, such as battery changes for telemetry units, checking the status of unit equipment, cleaning equipment between patients, and proper storage of supplies.
- Assist RN/Licensed Independent Practitioner with treatments and procedures by preparing patients, obtaining and setting up equipment and supplies, and utilizing sterile technique when indicated.
- Observe, measure, and record oral food and fluid intake, setting up full-strength tube feeding solutions and refilling tube feeding bags as directed.
- Assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharge procedures, functioning as a unit secretary with administrative responsibilities.
- Answer the telephone using appropriate telephone etiquette, taking and relaying messages, and utilizing intra-department communication systems.
- Replenish patient and unit supplies and equipment.
- Comply with center-wide policies and with nursing department and unit-based policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Keep current with hospital and unit changes by reading communication boards and/or books, bulletin boards, posted notices, and reading and responding to UMMHC emails on a regular basis.
- Attend staff meetings and in-service programs as required or directed.
- Minimum of a high school education or GED.
- Current CNA or EMT license or Certified Medical Assistant is preferred, and one of the following qualifications is REQUIRED:
- a. Prior clinical experience or acute care training,
- b. Nursing student who has completed at least one clinical rotation,
- c. One year of experience as a PCA I - Inpatient and has completed all unit-based competency requirements.
- Current Basic Life Support or Heart Saver certification.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate in English in a clear and concise manner.
- Must utilize proper safety techniques and body mechanics in all work-related activities.
- Strong interpersonal skills to gather information from individuals, build relationships that support collaborative work within the department and across the organization, and provide exceptional service to patients.
- Proven interpersonal skills to provide respectful, culturally and age-appropriate communication with patients, staff, family, visitors, and others.
- Must have proven problem-solving abilities for routine situations and requests assistance from identified resources when more direction is needed.
- Must be able to remain calm when under stress or in emergency situations.
- Demonstrates sensitivity and responsiveness to patients' needs by acting as a source of information and approaches all interactions with the intention of building positive rapport and relationships.
Position requires work indoors in a patient care environment. Hand dexterity, hearing, and vision ability to take direction from a patient or provider, adjust equipment, observe, and describe patient observations. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Work is of heavy demand, standing and walking most of the time with the possibility of pushing heavy equipment and bending frequently.
Schedule Details24 hours per week, 11pm - 7:30am. Includes every other weekend and holiday rotation.
