Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Patient Care Associate to join our Cardiovascular Stepdown Unit at UMass Memorial Health. As a PCA, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and supporting our nursing team in delivering high-quality care to our patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide clear and timely communication to the RN regarding patient observations and changes.
  • Participate in maintaining a safe environment and utilize interventions to de-escalate patients.
  • Assist patients with daily living activities, such as personal hygiene, ambulation, meals, and nourishment.
  • Assist with moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients using proper safety techniques and body mechanics.
  • Perform patient safety checks, utilize fall prevention alternative devices/strategies, and follow Restraint Policy standards when caring for restrained patients.
  • Take and record vital signs, measure and record patients' height and weight, and perform EKGs, phlebotomy, and Point of Care (POC) tests.
  • Collect, label, and prepare specimens for transport to the lab and perform other selected unit-specific procedures.
  • Assist RN/Licensed Independent Practitioner with treatments and procedures by preparing patients, obtaining and setting up equipment and supplies, and utilizing sterile technique when indicated.
  • Observe, measure, record oral food and fluid intake, set up full-strength tube feeding solutions, and refill tube feeding bags as directed.
  • Assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharge procedures, and function as a unit secretary with administrative responsibilities.
  • Answer telephones using appropriate telephone etiquette, take and relay messages, and utilize intra-department communication systems.
  • Replenish patient and unit supplies and equipment, and comply with center-wide policies and nursing department and unit-based policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Requirements
  • Minimum of a high school education or GED.
  • Current CNA or EMT license or Certified Medical Assistant is preferred, and one of the following qualifications is REQUIRED:
    • a. Prior clinical experience or acute care training, or
    • b. Nursing student who has completed at least one clinical rotation, or
    • c. One year of experience as a PCA I - Inpatient and has completed all unit-based competency requirements.
  • Current Basic Life Support or Heart Saver certification.
Work Environment

This position requires work indoors in a patient care environment. The position requires hand dexterity, hearing, and vision ability to take direction from a patient or provider, adjust equipment, observe, and describe patient observations. The position also requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in a fast-paced environment with frequent standing and walking.

This position includes every other weekend and holiday rotation, with a 24-hour workweek and 11pm-7:30am shift schedule.
