Position Overview

The Asphalt Paving Specialist is tasked with the operation of the paving machinery and screed utilized for the distribution and leveling of asphalt on various surfaces including highways, private roads, parking areas, and driveways.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Operate the asphalt paver, making necessary adjustments to achieve the correct depth, grade, and finish of the asphalt material through screed extensions.
  • Communicate with construction equipment operators to ensure proper alignment and movement of materials.
  • Support the construction and paving crew with tasks such as shoveling, raking, and operating a wheelbarrow.
  • Collaborate with crew members to apply asphalt according to project specifications and assist in various tasks as directed by the crew foreman to meet daily schedules.
  • Adhere to all company policies and OSHA/MSHA regulations to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Report any issues to the Foreman, Superintendent, Safety Manager, or Human Resources Manager.
  • Follow the Foreman’s guidance regarding daily tasks and expectations for each specific project or job site.
  • Perform minor maintenance and servicing of equipment, referring major issues to the supervisor.
  • Conduct daily pre-and-post inspections with appropriate documentation in line with company policies.
  • Assist in training less-experienced personnel on the proper operation, servicing, and repair of equipment to enhance their skills.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance at assigned times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To excel in this role, candidates must effectively fulfill each essential duty.

Education/Experience

  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • 1-2 years of experience in asphalt operations required.
  • Resume demonstrating relevant knowledge and experience is required.

Work Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical, drug screening, and background check.
  • Strict adherence to safety protocols as outlined in the Employee Handbook is essential.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively in a team environment and assist coworkers or supervisors as needed.
  • Must be open to travel and work away from home when necessary.
  • Availability to work nights and weekends as required.
  • Compliance with personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements in designated operational areas as specified by OSHA/MSHA.
  • Adherence to all OSHA/MSHA regulations is mandatory.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Proficient in operating heavy machinery.
  • Familiarity with construction materials, methods, and tools.
  • Understanding of safety hazards and precautions associated with heavy equipment operations and construction sites.
  • Knowledge of trenching and shoring standards.
  • Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently in various working conditions.
  • Capable of reading, writing, and performing basic math to maintain time and material records, as well as interpret blueprints or project documents.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow both verbal and written instructions.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to operate complex heavy equipment requiring skill and independent judgment.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to manipulate objects or controls, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear.
  • May require prolonged sitting.
  • Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Able to climb ladders and work at heights.
  • Capable of working in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to exert 10-20 lbs. constantly to move objects, 25-50 lbs. of force frequently, and more occasionally.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals.

Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, high places, outdoor weather conditions, and risks of electrical shock or burn may occur.

The noise level in some areas of the work environment may be loud, but is typically moderate.
