Career Counselor Role Overview

Eckerd Youth Alternatives seeks a skilled Career Counselor to join our team. As a Career Counselor, you will play a vital role in supporting the personal and career growth of our students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide counseling services to students in all aspects of center life, including personal, social development, vocational, and educational training.
  • Assess and evaluate students continuously, providing assistance in continuing their education or entering additional training.
  • Document student contact counseling sessions, ensuring accurate records for future reference.
  • Collaborate with other departments to meet student needs, promoting a supportive and inclusive environment.
  • Conduct ESP and MY PACE reviews, updating information as needed and documenting in accordance with established time frames.
  • Assist students in setting short and long-term goals, identifying strengths and career challenges, and resolving personal issues affecting career readiness.
  • Complete ongoing assignments given by the Counseling and program administrative personnel.
  • Submit written student reports/evaluations as needed to outside agencies, referrals to Mental Health Consultant, Review Boards, or at the Center Director's request.
  • Participate in joint sessions with resident advisors and the Center Mental Health Consultant, reviewing student records and completing special needs requests.
  • Co-facilitate small group social skills sessions, including employability skills, career success standards, and Odle's Core Values.
  • Collaborate with residential staff, developing close working relationships and ensuring effective communication.
  • Develop and implement strategies to meet identified student needs, assessing transitional support requirements.
  • Provide training to center staff on related counseling techniques, promoting a culture of excellence.
  • Participate in student orientation and development of employability plans, ensuring students are well-prepared for the workforce.
  • Perform Retrieval tasks, grants, and verifies Leaves and Passes per PRH and Center Director mandates, entering information in CIS.
  • Track and manage projection data, updating weekly to ensure students are progressing as predicted.
  • Conduct intake interviews for new enrollees within 48 hours of on-boarding, ensuring a smooth transition.
  • Counselors will monitor student attendance, address conduct issues, and arrange for staffing and/or other interventions as needed.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and respectful environment, adhering to safety practices and promoting a culture of accountability.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, contributing to the overall success of the center.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree, including 15 semester hours of Social Sciences or related area.
  • One year's experience in a counseling capacity or related field.
  • Job Corps experience preferred.
  • Valid State driver's license in the state of employment with acceptable driving record preferred.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to compose descriptive reports and use appropriate techniques to implement program activities.
  • Ability to verbally direct individuals and groups and remedy dysfunctional behavior.
  • Ability to intervene with students in crisis with aggression control/safe physical management restraint techniques.
  • Must complete mandated training courses.
  • Sound knowledge of counseling techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to effectively relate to trainee population.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Position requires an ability to operate office equipment.
  • In addition, an individual must be able to interact with team members and maintain an effective working relationship with all facility staff and departments.
