This position represents a senior level role responsible for executing advanced duties and guiding fellow Officers in the management and security of designated areas within a correctional facility.Key Responsibilities
The following are essential responsibilities that are common across all roles in this classification, and they are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job functions for any single position: Maintains oversight of inmates while escorting individuals or groups throughout the facility. Conducts precise head counts of inmates in the designated security area. Performs regular inspections of inmates and searches of visitors, staff, cell blocks, and other areas for prohibited items such as tools, weapons, or contraband. Operates both manual and electronic locking mechanisms. Enforces all regulations, policies, and procedures related to inmate discipline, security, and safety. Monitors inmate behavior to identify any unusual or prohibited actions that may pose a risk to the facility's security or the safety of inmates, staff, or visitors. Ensures that inmates adhere to established standards of care for living quarters and personal hygiene. Maintains custody of inmates during transportation to other facilities and for court appearances or various appointments. Prepares and maintains daily logs and routine reports of activities and incidents during the assigned shift using an automated information system for data entry, updates, retrieval, and reporting. May be required to train and care for K-9 units, including feeding, grooming, and kennel upkeep. May assist in riot control and shakedown operations as a backup. May also participate in the pursuit of escapees.Qualifications
REQUIREMENTS for Lead Correctional Officer Applicants must demonstrate competence in the following areas:
A minimum of two years of experience as a Correctional Corporal or equivalent experience in the correctional officer series. At least two years of experience in implementing and adhering to institutional or departmental rules, policies, and procedures. One year of experience in preparing, maintaining, and approving complex records, reports, and logs using an automated information system. Knowledge of staff supervision gained through coursework, training provided by an employer, or experience as a lead worker overseeing others; OR supervising staff which may include planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others; OR supervising through subordinate supervisors a group of professional, technical, and clerical employees. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked, or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
