Job Description

The Nursing Attendant is a vital member of the healthcare team, providing direct patient care and support to Registered Professional Nurses. This role requires a strong commitment to delivering exceptional patient care and a passion for working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist nursing staff in performing selected nursing procedures, treatments, and functional tasks to specific patients, including vital signs and activities of daily living.
  • Observe, report, and record routine and specific patient data, behaviors, and responses to treatment on the appropriate flow sheet/EMR.
  • Provide safe and comfortable lifting, positioning, and ambulation of patients in accordance with the principles of good body mechanics.
  • Utilize mechanical devices as necessary and perform simple applications of heat and cold.
  • Provide care to the body of deceased patients in preparation for removal to the morgue and provide support to the family/significant others.
  • Secure property, obtain, assemble, and maintain equipment for use during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and assist members of the healthcare team with physical exams and other procedures.
  • Conduct purposeful hourly rounding for assigned patients, noting pain, position, proactive toileting, and possessions, and participate in the patient belonging process.
  • Transport patients by wheelchair, stretcher, or bed, and escort ambulatory patients.
  • Perform errands away from the area of assignment to implement the care of patients, including transporting stat specimens and/or obtaining supplies as necessary.
  • Maintain a clean, uncluttered, and tidy environment, maintain equipment, and clean as necessary, stock supplies, and work in a safe manner to provide for the safety of patients and other employees.
  • Utilize aggression control measures in the care of patients who are verbally or physically threatening and assist the RN with the application of restraints as required.
  • Perform patient observations for safety, constant/one-to-one, and/or every 20-minute checks of assigned observation status.
  • Communicate information and basic instructions to patients, families, and visitors, and support the mission, vision, philosophy, and goals of the Department of Nursing and The Mount Sinai Health System.
  • Attend ongoing staff development as assigned to maintain appropriate knowledge base and skills and to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Attend unit staff and educational meetings, demonstrate a humanistic, kind, and caring attitude, adhere to dress code in accordance with departmental policy, and maintain attendance and punctuality records in accordance with departmental standards.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Hospital and Departmental policy, procedure, and guidelines, demonstrate knowledge of the Patient Bill of Rights and confidentiality, and be open and responsive to the diverse backgrounds and experience of other people and promote an environment that is sensitive to cultural diversity.
  • Respect and value each patient's unique, individual needs, beliefs, and diversity and incorporate these into delivery of care, and assume other responsibilities/duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Completed training as a medical assistant or nursing assistant or equivalent training or experience.
  • American Heart Association Heartsaver Certification required; BCLS is accepted.
