This position is exclusively available to current employees within the Veterans Health Administration. This is an ongoing recruitment effort, and applications will be reviewed continuously as openings arise.
Position Responsibilities
The selected candidate will function as a Police Officer at designated Veterans Affairs Medical Centers. The role encompasses a comprehensive array of law enforcement responsibilities, including adherence to established regulations and procedures related to law enforcement, security operations, and patrol duties. Key responsibilities include:
- Safeguarding the civil liberties of all individuals on VA property;
- Detecting, preventing, and investigating criminal activities;
- Conducting patrols in assigned areas, either on foot or in a vehicle;
- Managing disturbances and ensuring the safety of individuals;
- Executing search and seizure protocols for evidence;
- Obtaining necessary warrants;
- Making arrests as required;
- Providing initial medical assistance before emergency responders arrive;
- Documenting incidents and activities during shifts;
- Managing traffic control;
- Assisting individuals in emergency situations;
- Performing additional related duties as assigned.
Work Environment: The position involves exposure to moderate to high-risk situations, requiring adherence to safety protocols and the use of protective equipment. Duties may be performed in challenging conditions, including extreme temperatures and adverse weather.
Work Schedule: Shifts will rotate, providing 24/7 coverage, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Duration of Detail: To be discussed upon selection (minimum of 2 weeks required, not exceeding 6 months).
Telework: This position does not allow for telework.

Conditions of Employment
- Must possess a valid driver's license;
- Completion of a physical examination is required;
- U.S. citizenship is mandatory;
- Background investigation is required;
- Random drug testing may be implemented;
- Probationary period may apply;
- Selective Service registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959;
- A complete application package is necessary;
- Online onboarding process must be completed upon selection.
Minimum Requirements: To qualify for this position, candidates must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in federal service, demonstrating knowledge of law enforcement practices and responsibilities. This experience should include maintaining order, responding to emergencies, and preparing reports.
Driver's License Requirement: A valid, unrestricted state driver's license is required, along with a safe driving record.
Firearm Requirement: Officers must carry agency-approved firearms while on duty and maintain qualification with these firearms.
Additional Conditions:
- Completion of an 8-week training course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center is mandatory;
- Drug testing prior to appointment is required;
- A medical examination is necessary to ensure physical capability;
- A character investigation will be conducted for selected candidates.
Note: Only education from accredited institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education will be considered for qualification.
