Position Overview

Indiana University Bloomington is seeking a qualified individual for the role of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor of Music Theory. This position is available for tenure or tenure-track appointment within the Jacobs School of Music.


Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Delivering graduate and undergraduate courses in music theory, including foundational theory classes in a large-lecture format.
  • Supervising research projects within their areas of expertise.
  • Maintaining an active research agenda and contributing to scholarly publications.
  • Participating in departmental committees and other academic activities.

Qualifications

We welcome applications from both emerging and established scholars. Candidates at the junior level should demonstrate a developing national reputation in research, teaching, and service. Senior candidates should possess a well-established national and international profile with a proven track record of excellence in these areas.

A completed Ph.D. in music theory or a related field is required at the time of appointment. Candidates should have a strong record of scholarly achievement, an active research program, and experience in teaching at both graduate and undergraduate levels.

We are particularly interested in candidates whose specializations complement the existing faculty and who can contribute to the evolution of our curriculum, especially in relation to nineteenth, twentieth, or twenty-first-century music.
