About the Opportunity

YWCA Minneapolis is seeking a dedicated and passionate Youth Counselor to join our team at Hmong International Academy. As a Youth Counselor, you will play a vital role in providing academic and enrichment opportunities to elementary school youth participants in our Beacons afterschool program.

Job Summary

The Youth Counselor will serve as a key member of the Beacons staff team, collaborating with colleagues to create a safe, respectful, and engaging environment for youth. This role requires a strong commitment to working with diverse populations and a passion for youth development.

Responsibilities
  • Implement comprehensive programming that meets the needs of our youth participants
  • Lead engaging activities that are age-appropriate and culturally relevant
  • Collaborate with program co-workers to create a student-centered and accessible environment
  • Maintain and implement safety standards for physical and emotional safety
  • Contribute to communication with participants and families, and to program retention efforts
  • Provide staffing support to Girls & Youth programs, as needed
  • Perform administrative tasks, including data entry and program evaluation
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Minimum age 18 years old
  • Ability to lead activities with youth in an after-school setting
  • Excellent initiative to carry out tasks and responsibilities independently
  • Ability to work as a team with program staff
  • Commitment to respecting and valuing the backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives of all youth in program
  • Ability to communicate with school staff and families in a respectful and professional manner
Preferred Qualifications
  • BA or BS in education, youth development, social services, or related field
  • Bilingual skills in Spanish, Somali, or Hmong
  • Experience in youth programming related to math, science, financial literacy, leadership development, pregnancy prevention, and positive decision making
  • Experience working with young girls from low-income, diverse, and inner-city families
Working Conditions

This position requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and to travel to various YWCA of Minneapolis, Minneapolis Public Schools, and community sites.
