Job Summary:

Marathon Petroleum Corporation is seeking a highly skilled Refining Chemist II/Advanced to join our team at the Los Angeles Refinery in Carson, CA. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will provide technical support to ensure compliance with ASTM D6299 laboratory quality control requirements.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Monitor and analyze statistical quality control (SQC) charts to ensure laboratory compliance.
  • Investigate statistical deviations in control data and determine SQC samples.
  • Validate instrumentation and ensure accuracy of test results.
  • Coordinate and analyze proficiency testing program data for the site.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and industry standards (EPA, CARB, etc.) in assigned areas.
  • Maintain data logbooks, calibration records, and maintenance logs in accordance with Quality Assurance procedures.
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and verify laboratory instrumentation.
  • Provide technical assistance to operations teams to identify and resolve process discrepancies.
  • Support internal and external clients with analytical services.
  • Participate in audits and drive resolution to audit findings.
  • Perform technical non-routine investigations, tasks, or experiments as required.
  • Properly pack and ship hazardous materials to outside labs per DOT and IATA Hazardous Shipping requirements.
  • Train other laboratory personnel on test methods.
  • Oversee testing performed by hourly personnel in assigned areas.
  • Participate in departmental safety programs and set an example for safety awareness.
  • Implement ongoing quality improvement initiatives.
  • Substitute for Laboratory Supervisor or Lab Foreman as necessary.
  • Prepare detailed reports and presentations as required by management.
  • Support off-hours duties, including plant shutdowns and routine on-call support.
  • Collaborate with Products Control Department leads to champion Product Quality Efforts.
  • Serve as the point of contact for LIMS administration.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field plus 16 hours of college chemistry.
  • At least 3 years of laboratory experience in manufacturing, environmental, third-party lab, or related industry.
  • Basic understanding of chemical substances, including composition, properties, reactions, and structures.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts and solve practical problems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and LIMS systems.
  • Excellent team building skills, adaptable to changing priorities, and excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and perform physical tasks in the field.
  • Valid driver's license (MPC determines valid status).
  • Legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.
  • Travel requirement of around 10%.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Chromatography troubleshooting and data analysis.
