Transportation Engineering Technician III

We are seeking a highly skilled Transportation Engineering Technician III to join our team at the South Carolina Department of Transportation. This role will involve performing inspection duties and plant reviews at asphalt plants throughout District One to ensure the production of asphalt mixes are in conformance with contract specifications.
Key Responsibilities- Perform inspection duties and plant reviews at asphalt plants to ensure compliance with contract specifications.
- Monitor the sampling and testing procedures of the contractor to ensure compliance with specifications.
- Perform assurance sampling and testing on asphalt mixes to compare with contractor's tests.
- Monitor production of asphalt at plants to identify and/or prevent potential problems.
- Check aggregate supplies, material delivery, heating components, etc on a regular basis.
- Make recommendations to contractor for corrective action on production problems.
- Work with District Asphalt Manager, SCDOT Office of Materials and Research, and the contractor's Quality Control Manager to troubleshoot asphalt production issues.
- Perform roadway density quality acceptance testing at the asphalt plant on roadway core specimens.
- Accurately weigh, record, and communicate the results to the District Asphalt Manager and contractor personnel.
- A high school diploma and two (2) years of progressively responsible engineering technician related experience.
- Attainment of a Technician Certification in accordance with the SCDOT Technician Certification Policy may substitute for six (6) months of directly related experience.
- A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
This position may require occasional travel, bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time. This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.
