The Customs Clearance Specialist at Geodis plays a crucial role in managing and facilitating shipments to ensure that client service expectations are consistently met. This position acts as the primary point of contact for designated shipments, supporting the daily operations of the company.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Acts as the customer service representative between Geodis and its clients.
  • Handles Customs and OGA (Other Government Agency) entries for the clearance of goods entering the United States.
  • Initiates files, records notes, and manages information and document requests within Cargowise and/or AS400 systems.
  • Classifies invoices according to the HTS (Harmonized Tariff Schedule).
  • Requests and disseminates information/documents to internal teams, suppliers, service providers, and U.S. Government agencies as necessary.
  • Collaborates with various offices, departments, and teams regarding all matters related to customs brokerage.
  • Organizes document requests, correspondence, and other documents in a file system identified by the relevant shipping/reference number.
  • Ensures adherence to regulations set forth by U.S. Government agencies such as FDA, EPA, FCC, and Fish & Wildlife.
  • Coordinates shipping logistics with U.S. Forwarders, Steamship Lines, Airlines, and Agents.
  • Converts and verifies shipment weight, volume, and foreign currency.
  • Maintains open communication with customers, carriers, and vendors.
  • Facilitates pick-ups and manages invoice files.
  • Assists clients with inquiries, complaints, requests, tracking, and tracing.
  • Accurately and promptly manages accounting processes.
  • Coordinates shipments from airlines, ocean piers, and CFS (Container Freight Station) to customer/consignee destinations.
  • Reviews documentation or issues documents to comply with government and carrier regulations.
  • Possesses knowledge of buying/selling rates to ensure profitability.
  • Ensures that emails and phone calls are answered promptly and courteously.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED (General Education Diploma) equivalency.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in customs brokerage or a combination of education and experience.
  • Familiarity with U.S. Government Agency requirements.
  • Understanding of U.S. Customs and OGA clearance processes.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Access, and Excel.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, demonstrating the ability to build relationships with a diverse range of internal and external clients.
  • Strong planning and organizational capabilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret various documents.
  • Ability to compose routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to apply common sense to follow instructions provided in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Mathematical skills necessary for ensuring accuracy in calculations.
Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this role, the employee frequently sits, reaches with hands and arms, and communicates verbally. The employee regularly uses hands for various tasks. Occasionally, the employee may lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. The employee is regularly exposed to ambient lighting and moderate climate conditions.
