The individual in this role is accountable for the comprehensive assessment, strategic planning, execution, and evaluation of care for patients requiring respiratory support. Key Responsibilities

Clinical Excellence and Patient Care

  • Conduct all duties with integrity, supporting the organization's commitment to ethical practices in all professional activities.
  • Employ assessment skills to deliver respiratory care interventions that maximize patient outcomes.
  • Collaborate with nursing staff to develop care plans, integrating a multidisciplinary approach.
  • Delegate tasks to other team members while ensuring accountability for follow-up and collaboration.
  • Implement respiratory care protocols in accordance with departmental standards and hospital policies.
  • Continuously assess the effectiveness of respiratory care by evaluating patient and family responses, adjusting care as necessary.
  • Complete orientation and annual competency requirements for both the hospital and department.

Patient Education

  • Evaluate and select teaching methods suitable for patients and their families, considering age, culture, readiness to learn, and comprehension levels.
  • Incorporate health and preventive maintenance education into the teaching strategy.
  • Integrate patient and family education throughout the hospitalization as opportunities arise.
  • Provide instruction on the use of therapeutic equipment.
  • Consult with relevant hospital resources to deliver specialized education.
  • Prioritize patient and workplace safety by preventing errors and reporting concerns promptly.

Leadership and Professional Growth

  • Assist in onboarding new team members by serving as a resource and mentor. Collaborate with unit leadership as appropriate.
  • Engage in educational experiences for students and respiratory therapy interns.
  • Pursue ongoing professional development and involvement in activities that enhance respiratory practice through networking and research.
  • Utilize evidence-based learning models.
  • Participate in departmental governance and performance improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Essential qualifications necessary for performing the core functions of this role.

Preferred Qualifications

Not mandatory for fulfilling the essential functions of the position.

Education:

· Completion of an accredited program in Respiratory Therapy is required.

· RRT certification is necessary.

Experience:

· A minimum of one (1) year of clinical experience in a hospital setting is preferred.

Licenses/Certifications:

· Valid Iowa Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license.

· Active Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) status from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).

· Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.

· Specialty certifications are a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

· Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking fluent English.

· Demonstrated multicultural sensitivity.

· Skilled in performing both basic and advanced respiratory care techniques, including the administration of inhaled medications and operation of complex respiratory equipment.

· Organized and efficient in executing required respiratory care tasks.

· Ability to complete training on the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.

· Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
