Rental General Mechanic/Service Shop Technician Job Description

Thompson Machinery is seeking a skilled Rental General Mechanic/Service Shop Technician to join our team. As a key member of our service team, you will be responsible for diagnosing, servicing, and repairing rental equipment, including Caterpillar, JLG, and Genie scissor and boom lifts.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Diagnose and repair rental equipment, including engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, such as oil changes, filter replacements, and tire rotations.
  • Work with mechanical, hydraulic, and electric/electronic schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Use test equipment to diagnose and repair equipment.
  • Ensure high-quality repair service on rental equipment and engines.
  • Respond to customer needs in a positive, safe, and timely manner.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly work area.
  • Participate in Company accident prevention and safety improvement activities.
Requirements:
  • Gas and diesel engine, construction equipment, and/or truck engine training through accredited technical schools or relevant military experience preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Two or more years of previous hands-on equipment and/or engine experience, diagnostics, and troubleshooting experience working with rental equipment.
  • Able to work standard five-day work schedules, including daily and weekly overtime hours, and occasional weekend hours as required.
  • Must possess a complete set of basic mechanical hand tools, including drives, sockets, and wrenches.
  • Must demonstrate professionalism, integrity, adaptability, and a strong customer service focus.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Possess and maintain a current, valid state driver's license.
  • CDL may be required for some positions.
Work Environment:

Thompson Machinery offers a clean, safe working environment. However, the position may work in situations where hazards may be present. A detailed knowledge of equipment and engines is a must, as well as a demonstrated proficiency in service and repair of equipment using standard safety procedures.
