About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Automation Systems Engineer to join our team at Royal Vopak. As a Junior Automation Specialist, you will play a key role in supporting the development and implementation of automation and control systems across our terminals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide subject matter expertise for automation and control systems, including design, installation, and maintenance.
  • Coordinate technical and engineering matters between terminals, customers, and stakeholders.
  • Support maintenance and lifecycle management of automation and control systems, ensuring SLAs are met and vendors deliver services in line with scope and quality requirements.
  • Configure, monitor, troubleshoot, program, and provide hardware/software support for control systems.
  • Participate in HAZOP/PHA activities and provide I&C input to achieve required Layers of Protection.
  • Collaborate with operations and maintenance teams to ensure automation/I&C design work and changes align with terminal operations and company standards.
  • Support P&ID development/update for I&C scope and maintain P&ID redlining and updates.
  • Review project documents and vendor drawings, specifications, design documents, loop/wiring drawings, and test procedures to ensure control system design and installation meet company standards.
  • Manage and monitor vendor progress throughout the life of the project to ensure facility standards, project scope, and schedule are met.
Requirements
  • 4-year college degree in a relevant engineering discipline from an accredited university.
  • Advanced degree in a technical or business field preferred but not required.
  • 2-3 years of experience in automation, instrumentation, and process controls in the petrochemical, refining, or oil & gas industries.
  • Hands-on experience with Emerson DeltaV DCS system hardware and software design/configuration, installation, and maintenance.
  • Experience with construction, installation, testing, and commissioning of control systems.
  • General knowledge of industrial automation standards, including ISA 88 and IEC61511, and relevant codes (e.g., NEC).
  • Familiarity with major tank gauging systems and associated industry standards.
  • Experience working in a safety-critical process industry environment, with a strong understanding of health, safety, environmental, and security principles.
  • Knowledge of business activities and processes in terminal operations is preferred.
  • Ability to manage complex stakeholder environments.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both oral and written, with listening skills and experience creating and delivering presentations.
  • Willingness to travel up to 20% (travel will mainly be to Vopak terminals in Corpus Christi, TX).
  • Detail-oriented, results-driven, problem-solving skills, stakeholder management/communication skills, planning and organizing, and team player.
Work Environment

This position requires an employee to be in an office environment as well as exposed to outside elements. The employee may be required to enter confined spaces and work in elevated environments. The employee must be able to wear PPE required by the location.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, speak, and hear. The employee is required to stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and may be required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee may be required to climb ladders/storage tanks up to 50' in height. The employee may be required to enter confined spaces. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
