Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Surgical Attendant to join our team at Duke University Hospital. As a Surgical Attendant, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of our operating rooms and providing exceptional patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Verify patient location and identification to ensure accurate care delivery.
  • Transfer and/or assist patients during transport, following departmental safety guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and respond to their needs promptly and professionally.
  • Assist in the orientation of new staff as requested by the nurse manager or designee.
  • Provide emergency assistance as required and/or directed by the surgeon and/or nursing personnel.
  • Transport specimens, equipment, and other materials to the appropriate area in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Deliver patient care according to the plan of care developed by the Registered Nurse, taking into account the age and needs of the patient.
  • Prepare the unit for cases and procedures, utilizing functional equipment and supplies.
  • Assist with positioning patients and follow accepted procedures for preparation of patients for surgical procedures.
  • Assist with wraps, casts, and dressings, and route non-functional equipment to the proper maintenance department for repair.
  • Set up and troubleshoot all equipment in service lines and 85% of all equipment in other services.
  • Clean equipment, tables, and floors as required with proper cleaning solutions.
  • Collect, bag, and remove soiled linen and trash properly.
  • Replace suction liners, trash bags, and other supplies as needed.
  • Return cleaned equipment to the appropriate area after the case.
  • Stock and maintain adequate levels of supplies at scrub sinks and sub-rooms as appropriate.
  • Maintain an orderly work environment by keeping operating rooms, storage areas, hallways, and all units clean, tidy, and hazard-free.
Requirements
  • Work requires basic mechanical knowledge for assembly of equipment and the ability to comprehend and follow instructions normally acquired through a partial high school education.
  • Level I: Six months experience in a hospital setting or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
  • Current BCLS certification.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge for assembly of equipment and the ability to comprehend and follow instructions.
  • Knowledge of sterile technique.
  • Physical abilities to complete job duties, including heavy lifting, prolonged sitting, standing, and walking, ability to push, pull, climb, stoop/kneel, reach overhead, and rotate trunk for prolonged periods.
