Position Overview:

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist is responsible for overseeing safety and environmental compliance activities at the plant level with minimal supervision. This role serves as the primary contact for relevant federal, state, and local regulatory agencies associated with the facility. The EHS Specialist is tasked with implementing comprehensive Environmental, Health & Safety programs aimed at safeguarding employees and mitigating risks to the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and execute health and safety initiatives that align with the company's safety management framework.
  2. Establish and maintain an environmental management system compliant with ISO standards where applicable.
  3. Facilitate training and enforcement of safety protocols, policies, and initiatives to foster a secure working environment. Maintain OSHA logs and EHS documentation for both internal and external reporting.
  4. Support plant-level environmental compliance and sustainability efforts, including hazardous waste management, air quality, water usage, and the acquisition and maintenance of necessary permits, in collaboration with external consultants.
  5. Engage with regulatory agencies to ensure compliance, address issues, and cultivate a cooperative relationship.
  6. Identify and report potential regulatory violations, implementing corrective measures as necessary.
  7. Conduct regular safety and environmental audits, possessing the expertise to take immediate corrective actions when required.
  8. Propose and execute EHS-related capital projects for the facilities under support.
  9. Investigate all safety and environmental incidents, utilizing root cause analysis to collaborate with the Operations team on corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  10. Oversee workers' compensation processes for the facilities supported.
  11. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of EHS regulations to ensure compliance with federal agencies (such as OSHA and EPA) and local safety standards.
  • Familiarity with safety practices in manufacturing environments, including industrial hygiene, ergonomics, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Experience in executing extensive safety, environmental, and sustainability initiatives.
  • Strong analytical skills to investigate and determine root causes, collect data, and make informed decisions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities, along with proficiency in data analysis and reporting tools.
  • Capability to work independently and manage projects to completion within set deadlines.

Education:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, or a related scientific discipline, or equivalent education and experience.

Experience Requirements:

  • A minimum of three years of experience in EHS, preferably within a manufacturing context.
