Position Overview:

The role of the Unified Communications Engineer encompasses the comprehensive design, development, and support of the telephone and collaboration infrastructure at the University of Maryland. This position is crucial for the lifecycle management and support of the network and communication equipment associated with the VOIP system and related services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and maintain the Cisco VOIP platform.
  • Plan and deliver collaboration services that enhance the educational and operational experience for students, staff, and faculty.
  • Ensure continuity of University services during major events or emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required. Relevant work experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis, up to four years.

Experience: A minimum of four years of extensive experience in administering and supporting Cisco Unified Communications and telephony platforms in large-scale environments.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficient in system management, maintenance, and troubleshooting within complex network environments.
  • Strong expertise in at least three of the following areas:
    • Redsky e911 and Cisco Emergency Responder
    • TCP/IP, OSPF, BGP
    • Management of Cisco Analog Gateways
    • Cloud-hosted VoIP and Collaboration Systems
    • Scripting and integration using Python and Java, WebEx, Google Suites, Cisco Call Center, Cisco Call Manager, Zoom, Teams, Slack
    • Experience with SIP-based conference and desktop video systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to develop software for managing and maintaining collaboration system integrations.
  • Capability to lead presentations for small to medium-sized groups.
  • Experience in mentoring junior staff members.
  • Strong commitment to customer service.
  • Ability to manage workload effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Proficient in office productivity software such as Office 365 or Google Workspaces.

Essential Functions:

  • Identify and propose solutions for problems within the enterprise network infrastructure.
  • Design, implement, and support network security services.
  • Integrate various systems effectively.
  • Engage with customers to gather specific requirements.
  • Work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Prepare purchase requisitions and statements of work with necessary documentation.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in a higher education setting and relevant network and technology certifications, particularly in collaboration and VoIP services are advantageous.
