Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Patient Care Technician performs delegated competency-validated patient care functions and applies technical skills of a limited uncomplicated nature. The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent, Maryland Nursing Assistant Certification, and completion of a hospital-based training program or equivalent experience. The Patient Care Technician will provide direct patient care, including bathing, making beds, feeding, oral hygiene, and turning and positioning patients. They will also assist nurses in assembling equipment and performing various treatments and tests. The Patient Care Technician will work in a fast-paced environment and must be able to prioritize tasks and work effectively as part of a team. Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care, including bathing, making beds, feeding, oral hygiene, and turning and positioning patients.
  • Assist nurses in assembling equipment and performing various treatments and tests.
  • Administer and change routine dressings to stage one and two wounds, surgical incisions, and peripheral IV sites after assessment by a Registered Nurse.
  • Perform venipuncture for drawing blood samples and established IV access.
  • Perform urinary bladder catheterization for temporary or permanent placement and implement catheter care in stable patients as delegated by the registered nurse.
  • Clean, sterilize, and appropriately care for equipment and instruments in accordance with operational procedure.
  • Administer enteral tube feedings via nasogastric or gastrostomy tubes, as supervised by registered nurse.
  • Set up and operate multiple lead EKG machines; attach and remove EKG leads; run a rhythm strip.
  • Perform chest physical therapy, tracheal suctioning, tracheostomy care and incentive spirometry treatments as delegated and supervised by the responsible registered nurse.
  • Perform minor housekeeping tasks to keep patient areas in a clean and sanitary condition; recognize, report, or correct environmental conditions, which may jeopardize patient safety and well being.
  • Perform related and delegated tasks when necessary, such as admission and/or discharge assistance, setting up special equipment, taking and relaying messages, procuring equipment, and running errands.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Maryland Nursing Assistant Certification required.
  • Completion of one of the following training programs: hospital-based program, community college, Emergency Medical Technician, Medical Corpsmen, or successful completion of Fundamentals/Foundation of Nursing course (under RN program).
  • Minimum of one year of recent, direct patient care experience required.
  • Current CPR certification is required.
