About the Opportunity

The Battelle National Biodefense Institute is seeking a highly skilled Biological Threat Investigator to join their team. As an Assistant Principal Investigator, you will play a key role in addressing national security questions centered on biological threats using your expertise in virology.

Job Description

  • You will perform laboratory research on a wide range of viral agents, including application of viral reverse genetics systems and analysis of viral and/or host gene or protein expression.
  • You will design, implement, and execute virology projects for the NBTCC program, working with standard and CDC Select Agents in BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 containment laboratories.
  • You will contribute to efforts to maintain and expand NBTCC capabilities, executing research efforts that may include molecular virology, eukaryotic genome editing, sequencing, and bioinformatics.

Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory research on viral agents, including virus production methodologies, quantification assays, and cell-based viral infection assays.
  • Design and implement virology projects, working with select agents in various containment levels.
  • Contribute to maintaining and expanding institutional capabilities for characterizing protein and peptide toxins.
  • Prepare technical reports, proposals, presentation materials, safety plans, and other documents.
  • Utilize software for data analysis and maintain accurate records.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations and policies, identifying improvements and reporting issues in safety, biosecurity, and quality compliance.
  • Presents research results in written and oral formats, collaborating with the team to achieve results.

Requirements

  • PhD in a scientific discipline or engineering, with less than 2 years related experience.
  • Experience in designing and executing experiments for medical countermeasure applications.
  • Proficiency in molecular virology techniques, such as viral genome sequencing and PCR/RT-qPCR.
  • Knowledge of recombinant molecular biology methods, including pseudovirions and virus-like particles.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment, exercising judgment within defined procedures and practices.
  • Willingness to work on problems of diverse scope, analyzing data and evaluating identifiable factors.
