JOB SUMMARY AND REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State University is on the lookout for skilled, enthusiastic, and dedicated engineers from various disciplines to become part of our Systems Engineering Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL). The mission of ARL is to innovate and develop solutions to complex scientific, engineering, and technological challenges in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intelligence Community (IC). This department emphasizes customizing and applying rigor to the systems engineering methodology to facilitate the advancement of technologies within the undersea systems sector. You will engage throughout the entire lifecycle of undersea systems, from initial concept development through design, testing, production, and the maintenance of deployed systems.

Your Responsibilities:
  • Design intricate systems by utilizing best practices in customer needs assessment, requirements formulation, systems architecture, concept development, alternatives analysis, system and requirements breakdown, detailed design methodologies, systems and process modeling, systems integration and testing, verification planning, and execution.
  • Collaborate with Systems Engineering and Subsystem Design Teams to gain insights into the design and functionality of our undersea systems.
  • Adapt systems engineering methodologies and techniques to a diverse array of technology development initiatives that encompass the development lifecycle from early-stage technology innovation to formal acquisition.
  • Engage and collaborate consistently with the engineering team, program management, program sponsors, and other stakeholders.
  • Assist in resolving conflicts and mitigating risks within programs.
Additional responsibilities for advanced positions include:
  • Lead and coordinate a diverse, multi-disciplinary engineering team.
  • Provide technical guidance within division programs.
  • Plan and oversee research projects that significantly enhance knowledge and understanding.
  • Initiate and spearhead new projects; guide programs of national or international importance; identify future challenges, research trends, and opportunities.
This position can be filled at various levels, contingent upon your education and experience. Typical qualifications include a Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline; 2+ years of relevant experience for the intermediate professional level. Additional experience and/or education are necessary for higher-level roles.

Essential Skills/Experience:
  • Experience applying systems engineering principles to projects of varying complexity and technological maturity.
  • Curiosity, proactivity, and a keen interest in acquiring new tools, techniques, and problem-solving approaches.
  • Proven success in collaborating within a diverse, multi-disciplinary, cross-functional team-oriented environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to present effectively to teams or groups, or to create documentation/reports that convey information to foster understanding, action, or decision-making.
  • (Level dependent) Success in a leadership role, organizing, managing, and directing multi-disciplinary teams while contributing to project management.
  • (Level dependent) Experience leading or contributing to technical proposals and white papers.
Preferred Skills/Experience:
  • Experience in the development of unmanned underwater systems.
  • Familiarity with requirements database environments (DOORS, Jama, etc.) for maintaining complex collections of requirements and test plans.
  • Demonstrated experience with digital engineering methodologies, including Model-Based Systems Engineering.
  • Working knowledge of Department of Defense systems engineering practices, particularly those of the Department of the Navy.
  • Active government security clearance.
Your work location will be fully on-site, with potential for occasional hybrid on-site/work-from-home arrangements. This position may require occasional travel to remote locations in support of testing as part of a small team of researchers, engineers, and technologists.
