About Richmond State Hospital:

Richmond State Hospital is dedicated to the individuals we serve and the community relationships we have nurtured since 1890. This public behavioral health facility, operated by the State of Indiana, is one of six state psychiatric hospitals within the Family and Social Services Administration Division of Mental Health and Addiction. As part of a newly integrated system of state psychiatric hospitals, we provide services to consumers across the state, serving as the Eastern Center of Excellence in Mental Health and Addiction Services.

Located in a serene environment, our beautiful campus offers a tranquil setting. We provide psychiatric and co-occurring treatment to all adults, regardless of race, religion, gender, age, disability, national origin, or ability to pay for services. Richmond State Hospital offers a range of therapeutic services, including individual and group psychotherapy, chaplain services, family therapy, rehabilitation therapies, and patient employment opportunities. Our unit-based programming is complemented by campus-wide specialty groups. We are recognized as a state leader in evidence-based medication prescribing, aiming to minimize the risks associated with polypharmacy while optimizing clinical outcomes. Our clinical and medical leadership collaborates with unit treatment teams to deliver the most contemporary and comprehensive care possible.

Role Overview:

This position requires a valid QMA certification through the State of Indiana.

Salary Statement:

The salary for this position typically begins at $42,672.50, though it may vary based on education and work experience.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role include:

  • Ensuring the safety of residents and maintaining order, which may involve restraining individuals when necessary.
  • Escorting residents to various activity and therapy areas within the facility and off-site for medical, dental, or legal appointments while ensuring maximum security.
  • Assisting in the execution of residents' treatment plans.
  • Monitoring patients during meals, classroom activities, and general areas.
  • Observing, reporting, and documenting the condition and behavior of residents.
  • Utilizing therapeutic interventions based on de-escalation principles and approved techniques for behavior management.
  • Helping residents maintain their living spaces, clothing, and supplies.
  • Securing doors, searching visitors, operating communication systems, issuing keys, and escorting visitors as needed.
  • Conducting searches of patient rooms for contraband to ensure safety.
  • Providing motivational support, counseling, and teaching daily living skills as outlined in individual treatment plans.
  • Assessing clients' training needs to meet treatment objectives for transitional living.
  • Advising clients on appropriate social behaviors.
  • Creating a safe environment conducive to learning, self-esteem, and self-sufficiency.
  • Coordinating client activities under professional guidance, adapting treatment plans to individual needs.
  • Developing community living skills through practical activities such as grocery shopping and using public transportation.
  • Managing clients' finances and teaching budgeting skills.
  • Assisting in occupational and recreational therapy programs to enhance independent living skills.
  • Performing routine clerical tasks, including scheduling, ordering supplies, and maintaining records.
  • Administering medications under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Managing aggressive behavior among clients.
  • Providing basic first aid in case of patient injuries.

What You'll Need for Success:

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent, along with at least 1+ years of relevant experience.

Related certifications and coursework may be considered for education or experience.

  • Certification or willingness to become certified in CPR/AED for professional rescuers.
  • Specialized knowledge of psychiatric nursing care practices, including medication administration.
  • Ability to accurately document and maintain records.
  • Capability to respond effectively in emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of behavior modification and restraint techniques.
  • Understanding of resident behavior and the ability to anticipate changes.
  • Familiarity with institutional and unit procedures.
  • Ability to assist residents with housekeeping and daily living tasks.
  • Knowledge of therapeutic rehabilitation principles and methods.
  • Understanding of the needs of mentally ill client groups.
  • Practical knowledge of teaching techniques, including motivation and behavior modification.
  • Ability to operate standard medical equipment.
  • Timeliness and accuracy in completing required documentation.
  • Valid driver's license for operating a vehicle in the State of Indiana.
  • Ability to manage client trust accounts.
  • Skill in recognizing client behaviors and taking appropriate actions.
  • Familiarity with existing mental health provider systems.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:This role may involve supervisory responsibilities based on agency needs.
