Position Overview

The Cardiac Monitoring Technician is responsible for overseeing the cardiac rhythms of patients utilizing telemetry systems, interpreting data, and promptly communicating any irregularities to the nursing staff responsible for patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitates indirect patient care in accordance with established hospital policies and standards.
    • Gathers, records, and communicates telemetry data for each monitored patient.
    • Sends rhythm strips and data to the nursing unit for patient documentation.
    • Follows established protocols for notifying nursing staff of any arrhythmias.
    • Ensures documentation is complete, accurate, and timely.
  • Aids in creating educational initiatives for patient care coordination that enhance health and improve outcomes.
    • Supports the RN in patient care by relaying arrhythmia information and addressing telemetry monitor issues.
  • Maintains effective collaboration with physicians and healthcare professionals to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
    • Shares relevant information during shift handovers with colleagues.
    • Alerts the RN, LPN, or Physician of any changes in the patient's cardiac rhythm.
    • Contacts Biomedical Engineering for maintenance issues related to monitoring equipment.
    • Utilizes computer systems to monitor patients for arrhythmias and significant events.
  • Engages in unit performance improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient care quality and service delivery.
    • Assists in data collection efforts as needed.
    • Suggests improvements for performance enhancement.
  • Exhibits leadership qualities inherent to the role of the cardiac monitoring technician.
    • Demonstrates proficiency in interpreting and analyzing rhythm strips.
    • Seeks guidance from the PCU RN when necessary.
    • Takes responsibility for actions taken.
    • Effectively serves as a mentor to new staff members.
    • Contributes to cost management within the organization.
  • Supports departmental compliance with regulatory standards and guidelines.
    • Participates in readiness for inspections and surveys.
    • Follows infection control protocols to minimize infection risks.
    • Ensures adequate supplies are available for patient monitoring.
  • Ensures patient safety in line with hospital and nursing department protocols.
    • Assumes appropriate roles during emergency situations.
  • Responds effectively to emergency scenarios, including internal and external crises.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma, GED, or higher education.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication skills for conveying complex information to diverse audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a Paramedic.
  • Proficiency in keyboarding or familiarity with computer systems.
  • Clinical experience in healthcare settings.

Certifications and Clearances

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an accredited program.
  • Completion of a Basic Arrhythmia Course or Cardiac Rhythm Interpretation class within 45 days of hire.
  • Clearances from relevant background checks as required.

Work Environment

The role may require adherence to specific safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment as per guidelines.
