Job Summary:

Under the direction of the School Leader or other certificated employee, the Instructional Aide/After School Instructor will assist in performing a variety of instructional support duties to individual or small groups of students within the special education setting or regular classroom, during and after school hours. These duties shall be designed to complement the instructional program to maximize the learning opportunity for the inclusion student.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement after school activities within assigned core program areas, including academic assistance, homework club, fitness/recreation, arts, and enrichment activities.
  • Assist in documenting program schedules, lesson plans, curriculum, youth participation, and outcomes.
  • Use positive behavior and classroom management techniques with children.
  • Accurately track student attendance (sign-in/sign-out sheets) on a daily basis.
  • Assist with after school program registration, customer service, and community outreach.
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety to ensure the safety of students, staff members, and others.
  • Participate in all after school activities, including preparation, set-up, take-down, and clean-up to ensure facility cleanliness.
  • Communicate and work effectively with students, staff, parents, school personnel, and community partners.
  • Under the direction of the Lead Teacher, work with students in small groups or in one-to-one assignments to tutor, reinforce, or follow up learning activities in core academic, language, and/or specialized subject areas.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining a clean, safe, and cooperative classroom and learning environment.
  • Prepare and set up instructional materials and/or equipment for use in classroom activities; maintain instructional material and equipment.
  • Assist classroom teachers in creating curriculum modifications for students.
  • Provide testing accommodations, including supervising students completing tests in a separate location or during an extended time.
  • Review and correct student work assignments.
  • Assist in the implementation of behavior intervention plans, which may involve the use of approved positive reinforcement strategies, behavior modification, other skills, or knowledge to establish and maintain appropriate behaviors.
  • Facilitate and support social interactions and foster the development of positive relationships between students with disabilities and their non-disabled peers.
  • Assist all students by modeling appropriate behavior and attitudes and providing emotional support and general guidance.
  • Support students to be active participants on field trips and school assemblies or productions.
  • Support students in community-based life skills activities, such as using public transportation, shopping, and ordering food, as directed by the Education Specialist.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 1-2 years of work experience in a youth development organization, planning and supervising activities based on the developmental needs of young people, or equivalent experience.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification.
  • Title I paraprofessionals whose duties include instructional support must have a high school diploma or the equivalent, and one of the following: an A.A. degree, a B.A. degree (or minimum 48 units in process), or pass the ETS ParaPro Assessment (passing score = 460), pass the CBEST exams.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to deal effectively with youth from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability working with young people, parents, and community leaders.
  • Proficient knowledge of Google Suite applications (Google Classroom, Hangout, Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.).
  • Unquestioned integrity and commitment to KIPP Public Schools Northern California's mission and values.

Physical, Mental, and Environmental Demands:

The Instructional Aide/After School Instructor will be required to navigate school and classroom settings, access and utilize technology, and occasionally lift/carry equipment 1-35 lbs. The role will also require physical agility to move self in various positions to execute duties effectively, which may include frequent kneeling, walking, pushing/pulling, squatting, twisting, turning, bending, stooping, and reaching overhead.

The role will also require the ability to analyze problems and generate alternatives, work with interruptions, concentrate for long periods of time, read, calculate, perform routine math problems, memorize, and recall objects and people.

The Instructional Aide/After School Instructor will work in a school and in-person classroom environment subject to constant interruptions and distractions. Adherence to KIPP's health and safety guidelines as outlined by the CDC, CDE, and public health agencies' recommendations is required.

Classification and Schedule:

This is a full-time, non-exempt position based on a school year calendar cycle and time off policy, located at our school sites. The hours are 10:00am - 6:00pm, Monday - Friday.

This role is paid over a 12-month period, including scheduled school breaks and summer break. The salary range for this position is $20.00 - $24.00 / hour. This rate, coupled with the additional 60 days of school break pay we offer, results in annualized pay that is, on average, significantly more than our district peers.
