At Aerospace, we prioritize an inclusive and diverse work environment where all employees can unite in our shared passion and ambition—to fulfill a mission that transcends individual interests.

Position Overview

The Vehicle Systems Division (VSD) is at the forefront of innovative ideas and data that drive current and future systems, providing groundbreaking research and development; technical assessments during the acquisition phase; conceptual and detailed design; assembly, integration, testing; and operational support. Primarily composed of highly skilled mechanical and aerospace engineers, VSD offers national expertise in vehicle engineering, guidance, navigation, controls, robotics, electro-mechanical devices, embedded systems, fluid mechanics, propulsion, thermal control, orbital mechanics, mechanisms, structures, structural dynamics, and dynamic environments.

The Thermal Control Department comprises a team of seasoned engineers with extensive knowledge in the design and analysis of spacecraft thermal control systems at both component and system levels. The department conducts technical studies, experimental investigations, and real-time assessments to guide and empower critical decisions made by our clients and their contractors.

We are seeking a Manager - Spacecraft Thermal Engineering to oversee the Thermal Design and Analysis Section within the Thermal Control Department. The ideal candidate will possess a robust background in heat transfer and thermal engineering disciplines, specifically as they relate to space systems, along with direct experience in the thermal design and analysis of spacecraft. The successful candidate will support both classified and unclassified spacecraft programs, with a focus on classified systems. They will lead, equip, and mentor staff while advocating for optimal solutions, best practices, and innovative approaches in the thermal design discipline across the space sector, both internally and externally.

Work Arrangement

This is a full-time role offering a hybrid work model that includes regular onsite workdays combined with remote flexibility as business needs dictate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the Thermal Design and Analysis section, ensuring the delivery of precise and timely thermal models and analysis results for space vehicle and payload programs, while maintaining ownership of essential thermal software and tools.
  • Strategically plan and manage the training, development, and daily operations of a team of 4-7 engineers, including hiring, training, performance evaluations, productivity optimization, and fostering professional growth.
  • Ensure the relevance, quality, and integrity of technical outputs generated by the section, while adhering to schedule and budget constraints.
  • Enhance the section's technical capabilities by developing or adopting new analytical or laboratory tools and improving knowledge management practices.
  • Encourage innovation by identifying and promoting research and development initiatives.
  • Increase support and influence with existing and prospective clients, facilitating collaboration and teamwork among section staff, department personnel, and across Aerospace.

Qualifications for Success - Manager - Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering

Minimum Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering or a closely related field with a focus on heat transfer or thermal sciences.
  • A minimum of five years of thermal engineering experience.
  • Experience in analyzing and designing spaceflight thermal control systems across all relevant heat transfer modes and throughout all phases of the program lifecycle.
  • Demonstrated initiative and strong leadership capabilities, with a proven track record of building and managing effective engineering teams.
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive interpersonal relationships with various levels of corporate staff, peers, management, program offices, clients, and contractors.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to client or contractor facilities, approximately 10% of the time.
  • This position requires a current and active Secret security clearance issued by the U.S. government. The ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI security clearance will be necessary (applicants will be submitted for this clearance upon hiring if they do not currently possess it). U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.
