Cytotechnologist - 32 Hours - Needham

Atrius Health, a leading healthcare organization, seeks a skilled Cytotechnologist to join our team. As a Cytotechnologist, you will play a critical role in detecting evidence of cancer, hormonal abnormalities, and other pathological conditions. You will work under the general supervision of the Cytology Supervisor and Anatomic Pathology Manager to stain, mount, and study cells of the human body. Your expertise will be essential in preparing and screening all cytologic specimens and interpreting findings under the clinical direction of a pathologist. You will evaluate diagnostic possibilities and make cytopathological diagnoses as required, consulting with the manager and pathologist on all abnormal findings. Your reports will be submitted to the Anatomic Pathology Manager with clinical oversight by the pathologist.
Key Responsibilities:- Perform microscopic examinations on gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytology specimens, interpreting morphologic changes and correlating results with patient history, diagnosis, and clinical condition.
- Prepare microscopic slides from specimens of blood, scrapings, or other bodily exudates.
- Fix and stain slides to preserve specimens and enhance visibility of cells under the microscope.
- Examine slides under the microscope to identify abnormalities in cell structure and report them to the pathologist.
- Maintain files and records according to guidelines and regulations, ensuring that all slides are filed according to department protocol and that smears are kept on file for as long as needed for patient care purposes and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Compile listings of patients for follow-up analysis of specimens, preparing and analyzing subsequent specimens for cell changes and reporting findings to the pathologist.
- Assist physicians in fine needle aspirations by determining the adequacy of specimens and preparing slides to help physicians determine diagnoses and subsequent treatments.
- Read slides in an efficient and accurate manner, meeting productivity and quality standards established by the department.
- Bachelor's degree plus clinical training in a Cytotechnology (CT) Program accredited by CAAHEP.
- CT(ASCP) certification required.
- Solid foundation in high school sciences.
- Prior experience as a cytotechnologist preferred.
- Ability to work independently with little supervision.
- Patient, precise, and excellent problem-solving skills.
- Proven ability to be accurate and reliable.
- Ability to work well under pressure and to finish tasks once started.
- Excellent decision-making skills, as findings will directly affect a patient's course of treatment.
- Excellent communication skills, both in writing and speaking.
A busy lab environment with frequent deadlines and interruptions. Lab employees must use protective equipment to avoid exposure to blood and other potentially infectious body fluids, chemical disinfectants, radiation, asbestos, and other hazardous substances.
