Job Summary:

As a virtual inpatient nurse with Carle Health, you will contribute professional nursing knowledge and skills in the provision and management of care to patients through the application of the nursing process. The position will utilize technology to communicate admission, discharge, and education to both inpatient nursing and patients/family members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess and document patient's status through virtual interview.
  • Function as a scribe for inpatient nursing physical assessment and as needed.
  • Develop an individualized plan of care using a collaborative approach with the patient/family and health care team.
  • Complete required documentation as appropriate, including patient chart and event reports.
  • Demonstrate technical knowledge of equipment and troubleshoot when problems arise.
  • Acquire and maintain current knowledge and skills in evidence-based nursing practice and advances in virtual nursing practice.
  • Demonstrate professional accountability for own practice as evidenced through seeking resources and continued self-development.


Virtual Work Environment:
  • Ensure all aspects of technology is functioning properly prior to usage.
  • Proficient at conducting virtual assessment, scribing, and admission/discharge processes.
  • Analyze clinical situations in a systematic way and act to obtain resources or correct problems to meet or exceed expected outcomes or patient needs.
  • Demonstrate ownership and persistence to ensure problem is resolved in best way possible.
  • Consistently prioritize work based on changes in patient condition, changes in assignment and unanticipated interruptions.
  • Identify and utilize team resources to solve identified problems or needs.
  • Choose an appropriate and meaningful communication style when interacting with others; give and accept constructive feedback to/from peers.
  • Actively promote and achieve customer satisfaction (patient, family, nursing, physicians).
  • Virtual Patient and Staff Education:
  • Adapt teaching strategies based on learner response and readiness to learn. Proficient in teach-back strategies.
  • Take cultural, age-specific, gender, and developmental factors into consideration when teaching patients about procedures, illness, hospital experience, etc.
  • Consult appropriate resources within the hospital to provide specialized education. Identify if virtual education method is not appropriate per patient condition and consult live inpatient RN.
  • Share clinical knowledge through teaching and in response to the learning needs of others.
  • Available virtually to coach-in-the-moment for new graduate nurses or nursing staff completing an unfamiliar process or skill.
