Job Description

This role focuses on providing medical and clinical support services to patients in the Surgical Services setting. As a Surgical Operations Specialist, you will be responsible for continuous, efficient, and smooth patient flow in this setting. You will provide support and assistance for physicians and registered nurses before, during, and after surgical procedures based on standards and protocol.

You will respond quickly to urgent patient needs by notifying a Physician or Registered Nurse. You will demonstrate a detailed knowledge of different types of surgical equipment and their use. You may perform various diagnostics and screening tasks.

In addition, you will assist with setting up daily procedure rooms, turning over procedure rooms in a timely manner, preparing surgical equipment and instruments for specific procedures, and circulating regularly throughout the unit to assist nurses and physicians as needed in pre-, intra- and post-procedure.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Operating Room team with specific routine clinical activities under the supervision of a Registered Nurse during surgical procedures.
  • Set up daily procedure rooms according to established surgical protocols and physician preferences.
  • Turn over procedure rooms in a timely manner.
  • Prepare surgical equipment and instruments for specific procedures.
  • Circulate regularly throughout the unit to assist nurses and physicians as needed in pre-, intra- and post-procedure.
  • Escort patients into the procedure rooms and obtain baseline vital signs and connect patients to monitoring equipment.
  • Under the review of the RN, obtain pre-procedure data, including but not limited to; height, weight, allergies, NPO status, post-procedure ride contact and call back number.
  • Assist during procedures as appropriate and assume responsibilities specific to the role of the Patient Care Technician.
  • Properly collect, handle, label and transport specimens in accordance with policy.
  • Clean and disinfect all surgical equipment, utilizing sterilization techniques and asepsis.
  • Assist the nursing staff in transferring the patient to the Recovery Room.
  • Communicate order supplies and needs with other departments.
  • Participate in restocking of rooms and checking and cleaning equipment on a daily basis.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Two (2) years of operating room experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively interact with staff, patients, physicians, vendors, and other departments within the hospital.
  • Demonstrate essential knowledge in all procedures related to surgical specialty area and have sufficient general knowledge to assist in other specialties as needed.
  • Knowledge of personal and patient safety with the use of electrical cautery.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work within the semi-restricted and restricted environment of the Operating Room and other Perioperative support areas.
  • Stands under hot surgical lights for prolonged periods of time.
  • Possibility of muscle strain from lifting patients and heavy equipment, shocks and burns from cautery units and autoclaves.
  • Possibility of cuts from sharp instruments.
  • Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, blood and bodily fluids, extreme noise levels, radiation, lasers, drastic fluctuations in ambient temperature, etc.
  • Ability to wear a protective lead apron for extended periods of time and exposure to radioactivity, harmful anesthesia gases and septic infections.
