Position Summary:

The Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant (CTPA) is an integral member of our surgical team, working closely under the guidance of Cardiac Surgeons. This role involves delivering direct patient care and performing both surgical and non-surgical procedures in various settings, including the Operating Room and Critical Care Units. The CTPA utilizes advanced clinical skills and adheres to established protocols to ensure optimal care for patients before and after surgical interventions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts endoscopic vein harvesting and other surgical procedures as directed by the supervising surgeon.
  • Performs comprehensive assessments and develops treatment plans for pre- and post-operative patients in critical care environments.
  • Follows medical staff protocols during daily rounds, including prescribing therapies and documenting patient interactions.
  • Collaborates effectively with physicians, nursing staff, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Prioritizes patient care tasks in coordination with nursing staff and supervising physicians.
  • Ensures compliance with The Joint Commission standards and hospital policies regarding medication management and sterile techniques.
  • Participates actively in emergency situations, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, as part of the healthcare team.
  • Maintains adherence to Society of Thoracic Surgeons' guidelines for documentation and patient care.
  • Exhibits professionalism and a compassionate demeanor in all interactions with patients, families, and colleagues.

Qualifications:

Preferred Knowledge and Skills:

  • Expertise in critical care medicine and surgical procedures.
  • In-depth understanding of cardiac rhythm management and hemodynamic principles.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of cardiopulmonary medications and intravenous management.
  • Familiarity with therapeutic devices such as IABP and Impella.
  • Proficiency in endoscopic vein harvesting techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge of Ventricular Assist Devices.

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Master's degree in a healthcare-related field.

Licensure and Certification:

  • Current licensure as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in accordance with state regulations.
  • Certification as a Physician Assistant (PA-C) or Nurse Practitioner (APRN-C).
  • Current ACLS certification from the American Heart Association.
