Role Summary

The role of the Physician Coding Specialist entails evaluating physician documentation, offering insights on coding precision, and ensuring the correct extraction of ICD10 and CPT codes from patient records for billing purposes.

Qualifications Required

  • Completion of a two-year college program in coding, encompassing anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, CPT-4, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM
  • Certification such as CCSP, CPC, or equivalent is preferred
  • Previous experience in coding or auditing within a healthcare environment is advantageous
  • Knowledge of Local Coverage Determinations and National Coverage Determinations (LCD/NCD) medical necessity criteria
  • Familiarity with regulatory and third-party payer guidelines
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and professionalism in interactions with healthcare providers and team members
  • Ability to multitask, analyze, prioritize, and work autonomously
  • Competent in managing multiple tasks in high-pressure scenarios
  • Uphold confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess patient charts for correct code assignment on professional fee claims
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers and the coding team to review audit results
  • Keep abreast of updates in government billing policies and regulations
  • Provide education to providers regarding coding standards and guidelines
