Job Overview

Position: Veterinary Technician

Reporting To: Practice Owner or Manager

The Veterinary Technician serves as the primary medical support for the veterinarian. They initiate the examination process and continue to assist the veterinarian throughout the examination, diagnosis, and treatment stages. By handling technical tasks and administrative responsibilities, they enhance the efficiency of the veterinary practice. Their role is crucial in educating and communicating with clients regarding their pets' health and well-being.

Qualifications and Licensure Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT)

Experience Requirements

  • At least two years of experience as a veterinary technician or assistant is preferred but not mandatory.

The hourly wage for this position ranges from $18.00 to $22.00.

  • Administer SQ, IM, and IV injections.
  • Address client inquiries regarding medical issues and refer to veterinarians as necessary.
  • Prepare estimates for procedures and discuss financial obligations with clients, adhering to hospital policies.
  • Provide clear follow-up and home care instructions.
  • Understand common medications, their dosages, and potential side effects, and communicate this information to clients.
  • Maintain an adequate inventory of medical supplies as per the inventory control system.
  • Assist veterinarians during medical, surgical, and dental procedures; prepare patients for surgery; administer anesthesia; monitor patients during and after surgery; and provide fluids as needed.
  • Ensure proper care of surgical materials and maintain the operating room's readiness.
  • Perform emergency procedures, including bleeding control, oxygen resuscitation, airway management, and external cardiac massage.
  • Conduct clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, heartworm tests, skin scrapings, urinalysis, and fungal cultures; draw blood for laboratory analysis; and maintain a record of lab test results.
  • Position patients for radiographs and perform electrocardiograms.
  • Place and care for IV catheters, including understanding IV pump usage.
  • Recognize common disease states and alert veterinarians to changes in hospitalized patients' conditions.
  • Prepare patients and equipment for ultrasound procedures.
  • Admit patients following hospital policies and the veterinarian's orders.
  • Discharge patients based on the veterinarian's instructions, ensuring they are well-groomed and in a medically stable condition.
