Our Schools:
Ripon Unified consists of five elementary schools, one high school, and one continuation high school. Approximately 2,288 elementary students are enrolled across the five elementary schools serving grades TK through 8. The two high schools together accommodate around 1,067 students in grades 9 through 12.

Our Staff:
Our certified staff includes over 150 teachers and specialists providing regular classroom instruction and special services. Support staff comprises more than 200 employees, including aides, bilingual liaisons, secretaries, custodians, yard duties, and more. Our leadership team consists of 18 administrators. Together, we foster a strong sense of community and a shared commitment to supporting our students.

Job Description / Essential Elements:

CUSTODIAL POSITION

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Under general supervision, organize, schedule, and execute routine cleaning tasks in school, office, or multi-purpose facilities within the district; during scheduled breaks in the instructional program, carry out routine grounds maintenance and gardening tasks, along with related custodial and maintenance duties as necessary.


QUALIFICATIONS:
1.

Knowledge:

Familiarity with methods, materials, and equipment utilized in custodial work; understanding of requirements for keeping school buildings and grounds safe, clean, and orderly.

2.

Ability:

To effectively use cleaning materials and equipment; to operate basic mechanical tools for minor repairs and adjustments; to safely handle hand and power tools for gardening and grounds-keeping tasks; to perform minor repairs and adjustments to building fixtures and equipment, and to maintain equipment.


Education:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

License:
Possession of a valid State of California school bus driver's license or the ability to obtain one.

TYPICAL DUTIES:
1.

Consults with the principal regarding care and cleaning protocols at a school facility, assists in preparing rooms for special events and requirements.

2.

Reports fire, sanitary, and safety hazards, as well as necessary repair work to appropriate authorities; as directed by immediate supervisors, performs minor repairs and adjustments to building fixtures and equipment, and maintains equipment.

3. Sweeps, scrubs, mops, and waxes floors; washes windows; cleans walls, furniture, woodwork, and other equipment.
4. May assist in training less experienced personnel and monitoring their work.
5. Orders custodial supplies and equipment as necessary.
6. Maintains necessary records and prepares reports.

  • At designated times and as directed by the immediate supervisor, performs groundskeeping and gardening tasks as needed to maintain site areas, including lawns, playgrounds, athletic fields, or landscaped areas; plants, fertilizes, and irrigates shrubs, trees, and lawns; sweeps pathways and collects litter.

CUSTODIAL POSITION

  • Responsible for completing the summer maintenance schedule developed in collaboration with the site administrator and Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds, which includes:
  • Painting inside and outside of buildings using brushes, rollers, or spraying equipment. May require climbing ladders.
  • Installing or repairing fences, performing cement and asphalt work.
  • Pruning trees, weeding, and installing or repairing irrigation systems.
  • Replacing lights and cleaning light fixtures (using ladders).
  • Shampooing carpets, moving equipment, and rearranging classroom furniture.
  • Scrubbing and waxing floors using electrically powered floor machines. Mopping floors and applying wax with mops.
  • Receiving supplies and moving boxes.
  • Performing minor carpentry, electrical, and plumbing tasks.
  • Dusting counters, cleaning windows, and general classroom cleaning.
  • Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees in this role must possess the following abilities:

  • Normal manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination necessary to operate power and motorized equipment using both hands.
  • Physical agility to frequently stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, reach overhead, grasp, push, pull, lift, and move objects up to 50 pounds at shoulder height and occasionally lift over 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Demonstrate normal depth perception.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • See and read printed materials, with or without visual aids, distinguish colors, read and comprehend rules and policies, labels, and instructions.
  • Verbal communication skills, including the ability to speak and hear at normal room levels.

  • Ability to use telephones and office equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is conducted in both indoor and outdoor settings, with exposure to dust, oils, and cleaning chemicals.

May involve working on ladders or scaffolding, and exposure to moisture, as well as some exposure to childhood and other diseases in a school environment.

Regular interaction with Ripon Unified School District Staff, District Office Staff, and the public.
