Diesel Mechanic Apprentice

The Diesel Mechanic Apprentice will be responsible for inspecting, repairing, and maintaining locomotives in accordance with company policies. This role requires a team player who can work effectively with others to achieve productivity and success.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Implement and comply with the company safety plan.
- Maintain a respectful work environment.
- Develop and sustain an environment where obstacles to success are communicated to all affected parties.
- Ensure clear communication between all parties.
- Continuously seek safe and productive ways to perform tasks.
- Comply with confidentiality policies as stated in the company employee manual.
- Coordinate locomotive mechanical department functions with other departments.
- Comply with FRA guidelines on Personal Blue Signal Protection of Workers.
- Provide customer service consistent with company goals.
- Work with connecting railroads to ensure efficient interchange of cars and locomotives.
- Perform air tests, inspect, and repair locomotives or components for structural defects and wear according to FRA and manufacturing guidelines.
- Comply with all rules, regulations, and programs, including drug and alcohol.
- Be proficient in interchange rules as they pertain to locomotives.
- Possess working knowledge of wear limit gauges and testing equipment.
- Complete written forms and reports, as well as necessary Federal Railroad Administration reports.
- Become a qualified locomotive inspector according to FRA regulations.
- Familiar with state and federal regulations related to the railroad industry.
- Perform emergency repairs and re-railing of railroad rolling stock.
- Solve practical problems and deal with various concrete variables in situations with limited standardization.
- Interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Have a working knowledge of various tools and equipment, such as welders, torches, hammers, jacks, and mechanical, pneumatic, and hand tools.
- Develop skills of subordinate employees to ensure highly qualified successors.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Completed a three-year Railroad Apprenticeship or have four years of railroad-related experience or five years of experience in another mechanical field.
- Ability to read and interpret documents, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and federal and state regulations.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
- Ability to write and update rules and manuals to ensure compliance with federal regulations.
- Valid driver's license and insurable by company insurance provider to drive and operate company vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to become a qualified Service Engineer according to Federal Railroad Administration regulations and perform electrical duties as required.
- Regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and elements, noise, and fumes from gas, oil, and grease.
