At Houston Community College, we are devoted to equipping students for academic, personal, and professional triumph, and we are seeking an individual to deliver instruction in areas such as Mathematics, Science, English, Foreign Languages, or Life Skills that will contribute to their success.



The Initiative:
The Upward Bound initiative targets students from the 9th and 10th grades to support and motivate them in completing high school, enrolling in higher education, and graduating successfully from those institutions.

Approximately 80% of participants in the Upward Bound program have successfully graduated from high school and continued their education at a post-secondary institution.



Your Responsibilities:

Alongside teaching your designated subject, you will guide students on academic and career-related matters, assisting them with registration, orientation, and assessments as required.

It is essential to demonstrate sensitivity towards students from diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including those with disabilities, in this role.

Additionally, you will be encouraged to explore innovative methodologies and techniques to enhance the quality of instruction.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Academic Success Facilitator is tasked with developing curriculum materials and enhancing existing curriculum in developmental studies (Mathematics, Science, English, Foreign Languages, and Life Skills) through various instructional methods including traditional, audio-visual, and computer-assisted techniques.


KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other relevant duties may be assigned.

Instruct Upward Bound participants.

Create and implement curriculum in the relevant subject area (Mathematics, Science, English, Foreign Languages, and Life Skills).

Maintain daily attendance records.

Conduct ongoing evaluations of students' abilities and needs.

Assess student progress each semester.

Prepare weekly lesson plans for each subject area.

Foster a positive learning environment that promotes student engagement.

Communicate any issues that may affect the academic success or ongoing participation of Upward Bound students to the Project Director.


Serve as a mentor and role model for Upward Bound participants.

Complete incident reports as necessary for the Director and Assistant Director.

Uphold classroom discipline.

Engage in all staff meetings and training sessions.

May be required to accompany students on educational trips.

QUALIFICATIONS

To excel in this position, an individual must be capable of fulfilling the essential duties and responsibilities outlined above.

The qualifications listed below represent the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

EDUCATION

A Bachelor's degree in Behavioral Science, Education, or a related field.

EXPERIENCE

One (1) to two (2) years of experience in teaching and/or counseling high school students in the relevant subject area.

Three years of experience is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Ability to inspire and connect with disadvantaged students and communicate effectively with parents/guardians, school personnel, and community organizations.

Familiarity with academic support and developmental services and activities.

Proven ability to work successfully with the targeted population.

Proficiency in IBM-PC operations is required.
