Pest Control Specialist

The Department of Food & Agriculture is seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to fill the position of Pest Prevention Assistant II. This role is responsible for performing a wide range of field, laboratory, and staff support duties related to fruit fly delimitation programs, including maintaining fruit fly trapping routes, applying pesticides, and overseeing treatment activities.
Key Responsibilities- Deploy traps, perform visual surveys, and apply control measures for target pests such as fruit flies, Japanese beetle, Spongy Moth, and European Grapevine Moth.
- Plan, organize, and monitor trapping, visual survey, or treatment routes and outside vendors to ensure compliance with Department policies and procedures.
- Assemble equipment and mix chemicals using the appropriate treatment and equipment method, ensuring compliance with pesticide rules and regulations.
- Communicate effectively with homeowners and the general public, establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
- Read maps to navigate to multiple locations, use GPS technology to site register samples, and draw maps to show exact geographic locations.
- Travel to various locations throughout the State to attend meetings, trainings, and assist other offices with detection and treatment efforts.
The duties of this position are primarily conducted outdoors, with exposure to extreme temperatures and weather, uneven terrain, and various noise levels. The incumbent may work at airport facilities, inside and around aircraft, and may be required to drive and maintain a safe driving record.
RequirementsThe ideal candidate will possess a valid driver's license, a safe driving record, and the ability to work well under extreme time constraints, exercise good judgment, and determine priorities. The incumbent must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and the public.
