Job Summary

Advocate Health is seeking a highly skilled Polysomnographic Technologist II to join our team. As a key member of our sleep center, you will be responsible for conducting sleep studies, scoring sleep data, and providing exceptional patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct Sleep Studies: Select and apply special monitoring electrodes, bands, thermistors, and other monitoring probes to patients' bodies. Prepare positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fittings and schedule test processes with patients.
  • Score Sleep Data: Follow sleep procedures to establish and document baseline values, score sleep/wake stages, and generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.
  • Implement Interventions: Perform procedures and therapeutic interventions, such as continuous (CPAP) and bi-level (BIPAP) positive airway pressure and oxygen administration.
  • Maintain Equipment: Set up and score home sleep tests, perform polysomnographic data acquisition, and verify integrity of collected data.
  • Provide Patient Care: Educate patients on sleep medicine, answer questions, and provide exceptional customer service.
  • Collaborate with Team: Serve as a technical resource, role model, and preceptor for students and staff, and act as a resource to staff both at own facility and throughout the system.
Requirements
  • Licensure and Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA), and Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) registration issued by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT), or Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) certification issued by the American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM), or Registered Respiratory Therapist-Sleep Disorders Specialty (RRT-SDS) certification issued by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC).
  • Education: Advanced training beyond High School that includes the completion of an accredited or approved program.
  • Experience: Typically requires 2 years of experience in a polysomnographic technician role.
  • Knowledge and Skills: Must meet the AASM standard of 80% proficient in scoring with interscore reliability, proficient at sleep study scoring, and possess excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Physical Demands: May drive between sites, operate all equipment essential to performing the job, and be exposed to road hazards.
  • Working Conditions: Must sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, and kneel throughout the workday, and be able to lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist, lift up to 20 lbs. over the head, and carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.
