Position Overview:
Beacon Hill is in search of a highly skilled patent attorney specializing in biotechnology to spearhead and implement a comprehensive global intellectual property strategy. This role involves advising management and team members on the legal ramifications of corporate activities, crafting and executing legal frameworks, overseeing a dedicated team, and coordinating with external legal advisors. The successful candidate will report directly to the Chief Legal Officer and play a pivotal role in supporting the company’s drug development initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate closely with various research teams to pinpoint patentable innovations and engage with internal stakeholders on matters concerning the company’s global IP assets.
- Oversee the preparation, submission, and prosecution of patent applications on a worldwide scale, both directly and through the management of external counsel.
- Conduct thorough freedom-to-operate assessments, both independently and through the supervision of outside legal experts.
- Regularly communicate with the executive leadership regarding IP strategies and the status of ongoing matters affecting the IP portfolio.
- Review proposed research publications for potential impacts on patent strategies.
- Continuously enhance understanding of the company’s business activities, products, competitors, and market trends while staying informed about evolving legal regulations.
Qualifications:
- J.D. from an accredited law institution, with admission to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction and/or registration with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
- A minimum of 6 years of experience in patent or intellectual property law within the life sciences sector.
- Extensive legal background in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industries, particularly in patent preparation, prosecution, and analysis.
- Advanced scientific degree (Ph.D. or Master's) in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, or a related field is highly preferred.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment, along with strong analytical, legal drafting, and communication skills.
- Experience with U.S. and international intellectual property law related to biotechnology or pharmaceuticals, either in a law firm or within a corporate setting.
- Demonstrated leadership, management, and interpersonal skills, with a creative approach to problem-solving.
- Strong client service orientation, capable of working independently and collaboratively, along with excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize effectively.
