Job Description
The UPenn Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) program, a federally funded initiative, offers no-cost services to 160 veterans across several counties.
This program provides free virtual and in-person college preparatory services, including:
- Academic assessments, digital literacy training, advising, and counseling;
- Non-credit academic courses and tutoring;
- Assistance with college and financial aid applications, along with educational support services.

Teaching Schedule:
- Courses are conducted virtually via Zoom, with office hours held on campus.
- Each course section meets for approximately 120 minutes once a week, with the option for instructors to teach multiple sections if available.
- Days and times for each section can be negotiated based on instructor availability.
- In addition to teaching duties, participation in periodic staff meetings is required.
- Design and implement a curriculum that aligns with the objectives of the Veterans Upward Bound program.
- Utilize diverse instructional strategies and techniques suitable for adult learners.
- Conduct assessments and provide constructive feedback to students to track their progress and identify areas for improvement.
- Collaborate with program staff to develop and implement student support services, including tutoring, mentoring, and academic counseling.
- Maintain accurate and current records of student progress and attendance.
- Engage in program meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities.
- Bachelor's degree in English, Math, Science, Education, or a related field; a Master's degree is preferred.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience teaching adult learners.
- Familiarity with best practices in adult education, including effective instructional strategies for teaching reading, writing, mathematics, and critical thinking skills.
- Experience with online teaching and synchronous instructional technologies.
- Understanding of the unique needs and challenges faced by veteran students.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with diverse groups of students and staff.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, capable of meeting deadlines and managing multiple responsibilities.
- Experience with learning management systems, such as Canvas or Blackboard.
