Job Description

Grassi is seeking a highly skilled Controller to join our Finance Department in New York, NY. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the accounting department, monitoring and analyzing accounting data, and producing financial reports or statements.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Financial Management: Manage and oversee the daily operations of the accounting department, including monitoring general accounting practices and maintaining internal controls.
  • Financial Reporting: Monitor and analyze accounting data and produce financial reports or statements, including the quarterly closing of the general ledger, review of journal entries, and general ledger account reconciliations.
  • Accounting Methods and Policies: Establish and enforce proper accounting methods, policies, and principles, and improve systems and procedures as needed.
  • Accounts Receivable and Payable: Review account receivable (AR) billing for proper job code allocation, resolve accounting issues for each active project, and review and approve accounts payable (AP) transactions to ensure timely completion of the AP cycle.
  • Fiscal Files and Records: Establish and maintain fiscal files and records to document transactions for annual audit, and respond to requests from external Independent Auditors.
  • Bank Account Management: Monitor running balances of bank accounts to prevent overdraft, transfer funds among accounts as needed, and request stop payment and maintain void check log.
  • Reimbursable Expenses: Ensure that payments for reimbursable operational expenses are properly coded to matching revenue accounts.
  • Project Management Support: Support Project Management and Contracts teams to ensure deliverables are met.
  • Reporting and Communication: Prepare reports for CEO and AVP-Operations, clients, and outside agencies as requested.
Requirements:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field required, advanced degree is a plus.
  • Experience: Minimum of 6-8 years of accounting experience, preferably combined with a minimum of 2 years in a supervisory role.
  • Certification: CCIFP certification (Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional) is highly recommended.
  • Skills: Understanding of construction accounting, especially the WIP Schedule (Work In Progress), and ability to review the AIA and reconcile payment breakdowns are strongly required. Knowledge and experience with standard accounting software packages, specifically Sage 50 (formerly Peachtree), is a plus.

  • Computer Literacy: Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion, be adaptable to various competing demands, and demonstrates the highest level of customer/client service and response.
  • Communication Skills: Expert level written and verbal communication skills.
  • Team Player: Highly resourceful team-player with the ability to work independently as well.
  • Authorization: Must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Language: Must be fluent in English (both written and spoken).
