About Varda
The realm of space offers remarkable opportunities to develop products that can significantly improve life on Earth. Varda is pioneering this initiative, utilizing the distinct conditions of low Earth orbit to create these advancements and reintroduce them to our planet.
Our mission goes beyond exploration; we aim to broaden the economic possibilities for humanity. At Varda, you will find yourself at the intersection of ambition and expertise.
Our experienced team, with a rich history in aerospace and technology, has refined its skills in the corridors of industry leaders. Here, your contributions will be valued and assessed by experts who, with extensive experience, are now dedicated to the field of extraterrestrial manufacturing.
While our goals are lofty, our approach is rooted in technical realism and operational feasibility. Our conceptual operations focus on crystalline material processing and reentry, supported by years of research and development based on the extensive achievements of the International Space Station and the commercial space sectors.
About this Role
As a Lead Electromechanical Systems Engineer, you will take full responsibility for a variety of manufacturing and research payloads within our reentry vehicle.
In this role, you will spearhead the development of electromechanical hardware, encompassing design, analysis, construction, and testing at both sub and full system levels. You will enjoy considerable autonomy in platform design while managing the entire product lifecycle from conception to completion.
Varda's payloads cater to a diverse clientele, so you must be adept at navigating various technical domains, either as an expert or as a technical lead, while collaborating with internal Varda specialists as necessary to ensure successful outcomes.
Typical Areas of Electromechanical Support Include:
- Pharmaceutical Payloads: Collaborate with Varda's product team to create spacecraft-compatible pharmaceutical equipment for manufacturing innovative drugs in space and returning them to Earth.
In essence, you will be constructing our space factories.
Research and Development Payloads: Work closely with the mission management team to assist government and commercial clients interested in utilizing our reentry vehicle for testing novel flight hardware (avionics, materials, sensors, etc.). This will involve modifying our vehicle as needed to meet customer specifications and developing custom hardware to support these initiatives.
Next Generation Manufacturing Platforms: We leverage microgravity to produce items that cannot be manufactured on Earth. You will be instrumental in building these factories.
Given the variety of technical challenges you may encounter, you are likely a versatile technical generalist with expertise in one or more areas such as structures, mechanisms/mechatronics, fluid systems, and/or avionics, along with a strong desire to acquire new skills.
Responsibilities:
- Derive hardware requirements and conduct initial design evaluations based on open-ended problem statements and stakeholder feedback.
- Assess the global implications of hardware design choices to ensure optimal system-level solutions.
- Collaborate closely with customers, product engineers/scientists, and flight hardware engineers (thermal, avionics, structures, software, integration, etc.) to evaluate and enhance payloads for their intended applications.
- Oversee the complete development cycle of various payloads (electromechanical, fluid systems, avionics, etc.) to fulfill defined product or customer requirements, including architecture definition, component selection, system design, analysis, testing, and qualification.
- Manage the hardware delivery timeline and overall success from concept to launch.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field with over 5 years of professional experience in related applications (e.g., lab equipment, aerospace systems, medical devices, thermal management systems, etc.).
- Capability to perform relevant fluid, structural, and thermal analyses to validate that a payload design meets requirements (e.g., Hand Calculations, Excel, Ansys, Femap, Nastran, Comsol, etc.).
- Exceptional 3D CAD skills (preferably NX) and experience in translating models into production-ready formats (detailed drawings, work instructions, etc.).
- Aptitude for driving integrated subsystem development with inputs from technical contributors across avionics, structures, software, GNC, systems, thermal, integration, and testing.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a talent for interdisciplinary technical communication.
- Ability to adapt to evolving requirements in a dynamic organization.
- Enthusiasm for making history at the forefront of both the space and pharmaceutical sectors.
- Familiarity with electro-mechanical components, including motors, valves, servo devices, and sensors.
- Hands-on project experience with complex mechanical systems.
- Understanding of GD&T and manufacturing processes.
- Awareness of system impacts on component design decisions, including packaging, thermal, environmental, and loads.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Over 7 years of experience designing structures or mechanical systems.
- Proven success in bringing products to market.
- Experience in project management or technical project leadership.
- Familiarity with aerospace hardware development practices (e.g., qualification testing practices, design for typical space environments, cleanliness, etc.).
- Ownership of a complex electromechanical fluid system from concept to delivery.
- Experience with electromechanical components, including valves, motors, pumps, etc., ideally at small scales.
- Ability to design and implement subsystem development tests as necessary to guide overall hardware development.
- Experience working on highly integrated systems (i.e., software, electrical, mechanical, thermal, fluids, optics).
- Familiarity with sensors such as mass, FTIR, or Raman spectrometers and/or optical microscopes.
Benefits:
- Collaborate with an exciting team of professionals at the pinnacle of their field.
- Engage in a dynamic work environment with opportunities for growth.
- Participate in a fully funded space startup with significant potential for advancement.
- Enjoy a competitive benefits package, including 401(k) matching and unlimited PTO.
- Receive health insurance, including vision and dental coverage.
- Benefit from daily lunch and snacks provided on-site.
- Participate in bi-weekly dinners.
- Access maternity and paternity leave.
