Position Overview:

The Hazardous Chemical Testing Technician plays a crucial role in the production and evaluation of asphalt mixtures. This position also involves assisting in the daily operations and oversight of the materials storage facility.

  • Undergo training on aggregate and asphalt mixture evaluation until proficient in each test according to ASTM/AASHTO standards.
  • Responsible for conducting aggregate assessments and analyzing data.
  • Carry out precise asphalt mixture preparation and testing.
  • Perform mechanical evaluations of bituminous samples in the Pavement Performance Testing Laboratory.
  • Obtain and maintain Hazardous Material Shipping Certification.
  • Conduct accurate asphalt binder evaluations.
  • Execute extraction and binder recovery processes.
  • Possess knowledge of the components, operational characteristics, and limitations of engineering systems relevant to the specialization.
  • Maintain a comprehensive database of test results and manage access to this information.
  • Ensure test results are readily available to technical staff.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance the efficiency of testing protocols and laboratory practices.
  • Contribute to the improvement of tests and equipment through mechanical, electrical, or other enhancements.
  • Perform light mechanical maintenance tasks on laboratory equipment.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Associate degree or higher in a science or engineering-related field is preferred.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in a relevant industry is advantageous.

Personal Attributes:

  • Comprehensive understanding of laboratory safety protocols, chemical hazards, and other measures to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Preference for working with mix design methodologies.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to work independently.
  • Proficient in computer applications including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Ability to interpret and follow ASTM/AASHTO testing procedures to generate accurate data.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment:

  • Work is conducted in a laboratory setting.
  • Physical demands include routine lifting, climbing, bending, stooping, crouching, and prolonged standing.
  • Must be capable of lifting at least 75 lbs.
  • Ability to wear and utilize protective equipment as necessary.

Organizational Structure:

  • This position reports to the Lab Supervisor.
  • No direct reports are associated with this role.
