Ammonia Refrigeration Technician

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The primary responsibility of this role is to ensure the effective maintenance, operation, inspection, and repair of various ammonia refrigeration systems within a poultry processing facility. This includes conducting preventative and predictive maintenance, as well as performing regular tests and inspections to confirm that equipment operates within the specified parameters set by the manufacturer. Troubleshooting and repairing equipment issues as they arise is also a key aspect of this position. All tasks must be executed in accordance with company policies, animal welfare guidelines, and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:

  • Assist in the daily management of the ammonia refrigeration compressor area under direct supervision.
  • Record necessary system readings and understand the significance of any variances, reporting findings to the appropriate personnel.
  • Carry out basic maintenance tasks as instructed.
  • Identify and report any unsafe conditions to the relevant personnel.
  • Adhere to all company policies, animal welfare guidelines, and local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Availability for weekend work is required.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Successful completion of the NOCTI HVAC/Refrigeration test, Level I is mandatory.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Proficient in intermediate math and computer skills.
  • Basic understanding of ammonia refrigeration systems is essential.
  • Familiarity with electrical and general mechanical systems is beneficial.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate self-motivation.
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts as necessary.
  • Strong work ethic, integrity, and moral character are required.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Compliance with departmental and company safety policies and programs is essential.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times in designated areas.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to stand for up to 8 hours.
  • Capability to lift items weighing up to 60 lbs.
  • Potential exposure to temperature extremes, including heat and cold.
  • Work environment may be wet and dusty.
  • Frequent movements such as reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, and crawling are required.
  • Exposure to odors associated with raw and live animals may occur.
